2010 Census

2010 Census Local-Level Data — In February and March, we are beginning to see the portrait of America take shape, as each state receives local-level 2010 Census data on race, Hispanic origin, the voting age population and housing units. As required by law, the Census Bureau provides these key demographic data to the states (on a state-by-state flow basis) so state governments can redraw the boundaries of their congressional and state legislative districts. The data began rolling out the first week of February, with announcements about which states will be included in the following week's data releases. 2010 Census Interactive Maps — As the 2010 Census redistricting files are issued, the Census Bureau is also releasing interactive state maps showing county-level population change from 1960 to 2010, as well as state-level data on race and Hispanic or Latino origin for 2010. The widget can be embedded on your website and will update as additional states are released. It can be found at <http://2010.census.gov/2010census/data/>.

Demographic

2009 American Housing Survey for the New Orleans Metropolitan Area — The first comprehensive look at the quality and characteristics of the housing stock there since the year before Hurricane Katrina struck. These unique data include information on people displaced by the disaster, their housing options, the degree of damage to their homes and repair and renovation information. (Scheduled for release Feb. 14.)

2009 American Housing Survey for Seattle, New York, Philadelphia, Northern New Jersey, Chicago and Detroit Metropolitan Areas — Separate data sets for each of these metro areas, providing a wealth of data on the quality and characteristics of the housing stock. Topics covered include, for instance, the presence of air-conditioning, satisfaction with home and neighborhood, housing costs and the presence of various amenities. The survey publishes data for 47 metro areas on a rotating basis, with statistics for a given area released roughly every six years. (Scheduled for release Feb. 22.)

Dynamics of Economic Well-Being: Poverty, 2004-2006 — Analytical report on the duration of poverty spells and the frequency of transitions into and out of poverty based on the Survey of Income and Program Participation. It focuses on episodic and chronic poverty, length of poverty, exits from poverty and the characteristics of the affected population. (Scheduled for release in late February or early March.)

Economic Indicators — The Census Bureau releases statistics that provide monthly, quarterly and yearly updates on key measures of the nation's economic condition. Upcoming releases in February include monthly wholesale trade: sales and inventories, U.S. international trade in goods and services and advance monthly sales for retail and food services. School Enrollment in the United States: 2009 — Feb. 7 — Statistics describing a wide variety of demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of students at all levels of school, from nursery to graduate. The tables provide information by age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, family income, type of college, employment status and vocational course enrollment — all for the nation as a whole. The data come from the Current Population Survey; historical tables are provided with annual statistics back in some cases as far as 1956. State Population Estimates: April 1, 2010 — Feb. 2 — The Census Bureau released preliminary April 1, 2010, estimates of total population for the nation, states and Puerto Rico. It shows the estimates in comparison with official April 1, 2010, census counts released in December 2010. The estimates are based on the 2000 Census and were prepared using the current estimates methodology without knowledge of 2010 Census results. Annual Capital Expenditures — Feb. 8 — These data, based on the 2007 North American Industry Classification System, estimate business spending in 2009 for new and used structures and equipment at the sector level, as well as three-digit and selected four-digit industries. The data provide the private sector, especially the business community, with a relevant, timely and accurate measure of current business conditions. These data are an important input for federal agencies constructing composite national economic measures, such as the Bureau of Economic Analysis' estimates of private-fixed investment, a major component of gross domestic product; the Bureau of Labor Statistics' estimates of capital stocks for productivity analysis; and the Federal Reserve Board's Flow of Funds accounts.
