Who in the United States Sends and Receives Remittances? An Initial Analysis of the Monetary Transfers Data from the August 2008 CPS Migration Supplement — Monetary transfers, commonly called “remittances,” refer to personal transfers of money to and from relatives or friends who are living abroad. This report presents initial results on the prevalence, frequency and amount of transfers sent and received. This supplement is noteworthy because it was the first time questions on monetary transfers were included in a federally sponsored, nationally representative survey. (Scheduled for release in early September.)

Income, Poverty and Health Insurance Coverage: 2009 — On Sept. 16, at 10 a.m. EDT, the Census Bureau will hold a Web conference to announce findings from the official report on income, poverty and health insurance coverage for the nation, based on the Annual Social and Economic Supplement to the 2010 Current Population Survey. The Web conference will consist of a simultaneous audio conference and online presentation.

American Housing Survey for the New Orleans Metropolitan Area: 2009 — The first comprehensive look at the quality and characteristics of the housing stock in this area since Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005. In addition to a wide range of specific characteristics of the New Orleans area's occupied housing units, these tables examine a multitude of other issues related to the effects of the hurricane, such as the experiences of respondents in the hurricane's immediate wake and the characteristics of units that needed to be repaired as well as those still uninhabitable because of hurricane damage. Data are also provided on units constructed since the hurricane struck. Characteristics examined range from the presence of central air-conditioning to housing costs and satisfaction with neighborhood. (Scheduled for release in late September.)

Working Paper No. 86: Item Nonresponse, Allocation, and Data Editing of the Question on Hispanic Origin in the American Community Survey (ACS): 2000 to 2007 — This paper evaluates the quality of data from the question on Hispanic origin in the ACS for the years 2000 to 2007. The paper offers recommendations for the question on Hispanic origin. (Scheduled for release in September.)

Foreign-Born Population of the United States: March 2009 — How do foreign-born U. S. residents compare with their children in areas such as educational attainment, income and poverty status? This table series provides a range of social and economic characteristics for the foreign-born population and their children. It is the only source of data that provides profiles of the foreign-born population by generation. (Scheduled for release in September.)

Economic Indicators — The Census Bureau releases statistics that provide monthly, quarterly and yearly updates on key measures of the nation's economic condition. Upcoming releases in September include construction spending and manufactures' shipment, inventories and orders. State and Local Government Employment and Payroll: 2009 — Latest data showing the number of state and local government employees (full-time equivalent, full time and part time), along with payroll amounts, for the United States and individual states. Employment and payroll figures are given for government functions, such as education, police, highways, parks and recreation, sewerage, etc. (Scheduled for release Aug. 31.)

Consolidated Federal Funds Report: 2009 and Federal Aid to States for Fiscal Year 2009 — These two reports provide an overview of federal spending at the national, state and county levels. The data have been published annually since 1983 and describe spending for procurement contracts, salaries and wages, direct payments, loans and insurance, as well as federal grants to state and local governments. (Scheduled for release Aug. 31.)

2007 Economic Census Franchise Report — On Sept. 14, at 8:45 a.m. EDT, Census Bureau Deputy Director Tom Mesenbourg will present the first detailed and comprehensive look at franchising in the United States at the International Franchising Association Annual Public Affairs Conference in Washington, DC. Media Availability to follow. These statistics, from the 2007 Economic Census, show data at the national level for nearly 300 industries in 15 of the 18 economic sectors for which data is collected. Previous economic censuses only included a question about franchising in the accommodation and food services industry.

Survey of Business Owners: Hispanic-Owned Businesses: 2007 — On Sept. 21, at 2 p.m. EDT, the Census Bureau will hold a Web conference to present data sets showing the number of firms, sales and receipts, number of paid employees and annual payroll. Data are presented by industry and size of business. For the first time since 2002, counties, metropolitan areas and cities can see profiles of Hispanic-owned businesses in their area. Halloween (Oct. 31) — Halloween is the subject of this collection of Census Bureau statistics, with data from demographic and economic subject areas focusing on the rituals and customs associated with this holiday. (Scheduled for release Aug. 31.)

2010 Census

Number of Temporary 2010 Census Workers Paid by Week and Census Region — Aug. 18 — These tables provide the total number of unduplicated temporary 2010 Census workers that earned any pay during a specific weekly pay period by Census Bureau region. Temporary workers earning any pay during a week are only counted once. Totals include temporary workers in Puerto Rico. American Housing Survey: 2009 — Aug. 19 — The nation's homeowners paid a median of $1,000 in monthly housing costs in 2009, compared with $808 for renters. About 93 percent of homes had a smoke detector, 36 percent had a carbon monoxide detector and 5 percent had a sprinkler system. These are just some of the statistics from this annual survey. Who's Minding the Kids? Child Care Arrangements: Spring 2005/Summer 2006 — Aug. 17 — About 55 percent of preschoolers and 58 percent of grade-schoolers were not in a regular child care placement during the summer of 2006. In spring 2005, 23 percent of preschoolers were regularly cared for by a grandparent and 16 percent were cared for by their father while mom worked. Child care arrangements according to various demographic characteristics of the mother are explored in this report.
