WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) released the following statement in commemoration of the Lunar New Year, which begins today, Thursday, February 3:

"Please join me as we celebrate one of the most festive times of the year for many Asian and Asian-American cultures - the Lunar New Year. Asian-American communities throughout the 9th Congressional District will gather to commemorate what has become one of the most celebrated and joyous occasions, not only in Chinatown, one of the most culturally-vibrant communities in the City of Oakland, but throughout the entire East Bay.

"This year, we celebrate 2011 as the Year of the Rabbit – traditionally associated with tranquility, financial acumen and unquestionable wisdom. According to Chinese astrology, quietly charismatic, thoughtful and calm, rabbits are admired for their tactful and considerate dealings with all who know them. As such, they are most often depended upon for their wise counsel, or as someone in which to put valued trust in a personal friendship or a business dealing.

"The Lunar New Year holds greater meaning for the Asian-American community as it follows the election of the first Chinese-American Mayor, Jean Quan, a longtime community activist and member of the Oakland City Council, who has dedicated herself to improving the lives of the city's residents.

"In celebrating the Lunar New year, it is important that we honor our nation's great diversity and recognize it as a source of strength for all. And as the Asian-American community gathers throughout the 9th Congressional District to celebrate the Lunar New Year, I offer my warmest wishes in the Year of the Rabbit."
