Barbara Lee Introduces Resolution to Honor National Caribbean American HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

(Washington, DC) – Last night, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D-Oakland) introduced a resolution to recognize National Caribbean American HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, which is today.

“In 2006, National Caribbean American HIV/AIDS Awareness Day was created as an opportunity for Caribbean American and Caribbean-born individuals to get educated, get tested, get treated, and get involved,” said Lee. “This is critical because as we attempt to combat HIV/AIDS in America, overcoming racial and ethnic disparities remains a serious issue at the heart of the fight. In particular, Caribbean Americans face low quality health care and a cultural stigma against public discussion of HIV/AIDS.”

H.Con.Res. 166, which Lee introduced with the bipartisan support of six cosponsors, recognizes the second anniversary of National Caribbean American HIV/AIDS Awareness Day and encourages state and local governments, public health agencies, and the media to publicize the day and support its ideals and goals.

“The celebration of this day every June 8 allows people to express their support for those infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS and inspire hope for the future improvement of health and health care in the Caribbean-American community,” said Lee.
