LANCE: HOUSE GIVES FINAL APPROVAL OF $152,000 TO HELP FUND MANVILLE'S FLOOD IMPROVEMENT STUDY

WASHINGTON-- Rep. Leonard Lance (NJ-07) announced Tuesday that the House of Representatives gave its final approval of legislation that includes his request for $150,000 to help fund a feasibility study by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that would help determine the best course of action to help Manville meet its flood control needs.

Lance made the announcement at the Manville Borough Hall with local community and governmental leaders – including Manville Mayor Lillian Zuza.

“Over the years, Manville residents have seen severe flooding that has devastated their homes, businesses, municipal facilities and public infrastructure,” said Lance. “I recognize this is a long-term project, but it is critical that the Army Corps of Engineers move forward with this study so that we can move onto the next phase. Manville can’t afford to wait for another flood.”

“Manville can’t sustain another significant flood, like the 2007 Nor’easter, and we need to move this project forward,” said Manville Mayor Lillian Zuza. “We are grateful to Congressman Lance for recognizing how important this issue is to our town and we thank him for going to bat for us. While we still have a long way to go, today’s good news means we are moving forward in the right direction to protect our citizens.”

According to Army Corps officials, the feasibility study is the first step in long process to determine what kinds flood control measures would be needed to help Manville with its flood control needs. Specifically, the $152,000 would be used to continue the feasibility phase of the study, including additional data gathering and analyses, screening of alternatives, plan formulation and environmental scoping efforts.

Lance said the Senate is expected to give its final approval for Manville’s funding soon and then the legislation will be sent to the President for signature into law.
