Just like the people, business, and homes for which the U.S. Census Bureau collects data, some questions simply do not fit into an easily definable category. As evidenced by this 1930s photo, the process of transferring data from a handwritten census
schedule to punch cards was largely performed by women. These clerks would produce thousands
of punch card each day that were tabulated, sorted, and tabulated again, to produce statistical tables.
