Retirement C. Harvey Monk, Jr., Associate Director for Economic Programs

**********************************************************************

After 39 years of dedicated federal service at the U.S. Census Bureau, Harvey Monk, Jr., Associate Director for Economic Programs, will be retiring on July 31, 2010.

Mr. Monk's Census Bureau's career began in 1971 at the National Processing Center in Jeffersonville, Indiana after receiving a Bachelor of Science degree from North Carolina A&T University. In 1973, he moved to the Suitland Federal Center Headquarters to work in the Economic Survey Division under Shirley Kallek and Roger Bugenhagen and later Thomas Mesenbourg. In 1993, Mr. Monk, as Chief of the Foreign Trade Division, directed the activities of the Census Bureau's foreign trade statistics programs. These programs provide the official monthly statistics on imports, exports, and balance of trade for all types of merchandise and commodities moving between the United States and its international trading partners. During his tenure, he oversaw efforts to develop and implement the Automated Export System and the Foreign Trade Division's outreach education program designed to improve compliance with export regulations. These efforts resulted in more timely and accurate data, as well as significant cost savings. In 2005, as Assistant Director for Economic Programs, he provided executive and professional leadership to all divisions of the Economic Directorate conducting the censuses of manufacturers, mineral industries, retail and wholesale trade, service industries, and transportation. In 2008, Mr. Monk assumed the role of Associate Director for Economic Programs for the Census Bureau.

Mr. Monk has a long history at the Census Bureau, having served in various leadership positions for over 39 years. His knowledge of conducting economic censuses and administering programs to collect, process, and disseminate statistical economic data from special and current surveys has been a critical asset in the management of the Census Bureau's economic census information. Harvey is the recipient of numerous awards including three National Partnerships for Reinventing Government, Vice President Gore's Hammer Award, the Department of Commerce's Gold Medal Award, and the Census Bureau's Bronze Medal Award.

In retirement, Mr. Monk plans to reside in Clayton, North Carolina with his wife Barbara.
