ISAC Launches Illinois Student Assistance Corps
Near-peer mentors to guide students throughout Illinois on the college path
Palos Heights, Ill. – The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) announced the formation of the Illinois Student Assistance Corps, consisting of over 60 near-peer mentors that will march in Chicago’s Bud Billiken Back-to-School Parade on Saturday morning before being deployed throughout the state.

Governor Quinn Signs Bill To Ban Texting While Driving
New Legislation Will Save Lives on Roads in Illinois
CHICAGO – August 6, 2009. Governor Pat Quinn signed a bill today at Northeastern Illinois University that bans motorists from sending text messages while driving in Illinois. Additionally, the governor signed legislation that makes it illegal to talk on a cell phone while driving through a highway construction zone or school speed zone. The new laws go into effect on January 1, 2010.

Gov. Quinn announces $13 million is awarded to communities to create Safe Routes to School
Program is designed to promote a healthier, more active lifestyle for children in grades K-8
CHICAGO – Governor Pat Quinn today announced $13.1 million in Safe Routes to School grants to schools and communities across the state. This 100 percent federally funded program is designed to enable and encourage children to walk and bike to school.

Medical Professionals Offered More Time for Compliance with Parental Notification Law
CHICAGO – The Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR) today accepted the recommendations of members of its Medical Disciplinary Board to provide Illinois physicians a 90-day grace period before imposing sanctions included in the Parental Notice of Abortion Act of 1995. After the federal court dissolved the long-standing injunction against implementing the Act, the law took effect yesterday, August 4, 2009. The provision of the Act addressed by the members’ recommendation would require disciplinary actions against physicians who “willfully” fail to provide notice of a planned procedure.

Activist will focus on safe and clean water supplies
CHICAGO – August 05, 2009. Governor Pat Quinn today announced the appointment of Mariyana Spyropoulos to the Board of Commissioners at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. As a commissioner, Spyropoulos will be deeply involved in creating and maintaining policies affecting flooding, storm water management, rivers, and conservation.

State Public Health Director Warns People To Avoid Contact With Bats
Dozens of bat exposures already documented as we enter busy bat season
SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. Damon T. Arnold is warning Illinoisans to avoid contact with bats as we approach the time of year when bats are the most active. Bats are the primary carrier of rabies in Illinois and already this year, 37 bats have tested positive for rabies in 13 counties.
