Census Bureau Launches Official Corporate Blog — Sept. 16 — The Census Bureau has launched “Random Samplings,” a blog touching on topics where Census Bureau data may contribute to the public discussion of the great issues of the day, such as poverty and business growth. American Community Survey

2009 American Community Survey (ACS) 1-Year Estimates — Based on survey responses collected over the course of the 2009 calendar year, this product provides data on more than 40 demographic, socioeconomic and housing topics. Among those covered are income, poverty, health insurance, educational attainment, the commute to work, the foreign-born population, language spoken at home, ancestry, occupation, number of vehicles available and housing costs. These estimates will be available for the nation, all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, every congressional district and all counties, places and metropolitan areas with populations of 65,000 or more. In addition to the statistics available via the American FactFinder data tool, a set of analytical briefs with ACS data will be available on six topics, with 13 additional briefs to be released Oct. 12. This is the first in a series of key Census Bureau releases that are vital in measuring the population. Between now and the end of the year, we will release a series of data products providing information about our country's population, each doing so in a different way. (Scheduled for release Sept. 28.)

Demographic

Foreign-Born Population of the United States: 2009 — How do foreign-born U.S. residents compare with their children in areas such as educational attainment, income and poverty status? This table series provides a range of social and economic characteristics for the foreign-born population and their children. It is the only source of data that provides profiles of the foreign-born population by generation. (Scheduled for release in October.)

Economic

2010 2nd Quarter Summary of State and Local Government Tax Revenue — This summary shows quarterly tax revenue data on property, sales, license, income and other taxes. Data are shown for individual state governments as well as national-level estimates of total state and local taxes, including 12-month calculations. This quarterly survey has been conducted continuously since 1962. (Scheduled for release Sept. 27.)

Economic Indicators — The Census Bureau releases statistics that provide monthly, quarterly and yearly updates on key measures of the nation's economic condition. Upcoming releases in October include monthly wholesale trade: sales and inventories and manufactures' shipments, inventories and orders and U.S. international trade in goods and services. Facts for Features

Thanksgiving Day: Nov. 25 — To celebrate our national day of thanksgiving, this release highlights a range of economic and demographic statistics pertaining to the menu of culinary delights consumed on Turkey Day. (Scheduled for release in September.)

Demographic

Working Paper on the Change in Cohabiting Couples from 2009 to 2010 — Sept. 23 — This research paper from Rose Kreider, a demographer in the Census Bureau's Housing and Household Economic Statistics Division, examines the factors that may have contributed to the increase in cohabiting as well as the characteristics of couples living together. It compares couples who began cohabiting within the last year with couples who have lived together for at least a year. The paper notes the increase in cohabiting couples from 6.7 million in 2009 to 7.5 million in 2010 and suggests that economic factors may have contributed to the increase. The data from the paper comes from the 2010 Annual Social and Economic Supplement to the Current Population Survey. Working Paper No. 86: Item Nonresponse, Allocation, and Data Editing of the Question on Hispanic Origin in the American Community Survey (ACS): 2000 to 2007 — Aug. 23 — This paper evaluates the quality of data from the question on Hispanic origin in the ACS for the years 2000 to 2007. Survey of Business Owners: Hispanic-Owned Businesses: 2007 — Sept. 21 — The Census Bureau held a Web conference to present data sets showing the number of firms, sales and receipts, number of paid employees and annual payroll. Data are presented by industry and size of business. For the first time since 2002, counties, metropolitan areas and cities can see statistical profiles of Hispanic-owned businesses in their areas. 2007 Economic Census Franchise Report — Sept. 14 — Census Bureau Deputy Director Thomas Mesenbourg presented the first detailed and comprehensive look at franchising in the United States at the International Franchise Association's Annual Public Affairs Conference in Washington. These statistics, from the 2007 Economic Census, show data at the national level for nearly 300 industries in 15 of the 18 economic sectors for which data is collected.
