2010 Census

Portrait of America Road Tour — The U.S. Census Bureau's national tour vehicle -- a 46-foot gooseneck trailer -- will head out from New York City's Times Square to begin the 2010 Census Portrait of America Road Tour, a cross-country interactive experience specifically designed to rally support and boost participation in the 2010 Census. The vehicle will be featured on NBC's "Today." Also, 12 regional census vehicles will begin travels from various famous landmarks across the nation. (Event scheduled for Jan. 4.)

National Partnerships — The Census Bureau and its 12 regional offices have signed up a record number of organizations that are volunteering to help spread the message that the 2010 Census is easy, safe and important. (Tentatively scheduled for release in early January.)

Advertising Launch — James Brown from CBS will emcee the national unveiling of the 2010 Census advertising campaign -- featuring a peak at the Super Bowl TV ad -- from the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington. (Event scheduled for Jan. 14.)

First Enumeration in Alaska — Census Bureau Director Robert M. Groves officially starts the 2010 Census by visiting a household in Noorvik, an Inupiat Eskimo village in western Alaska. The rest of the nation will receive census forms in the mail in mid-March. (Event scheduled for Jan. 25.)

American Community Survey

Race and Hispanic Origin of the Foreign-Born Population in the United States: 2007 — This report from American Community Survey data describes the race and Hispanic-origin composition of the foreign-born population in 2007 and compares it with that of the total and native-born populations. It shows the foreign-born have a pattern of race and Hispanic-origin reporting that is markedly different from the native population. (Tentatively scheduled for release in late January.)

Demographic

Estimates of State Voting-Age Population: July 1, 2009 — Number of people 18 and older in each state and their population as a percentage of the total. (Scheduled for release Jan. 7.)

Economic Characteristics of Persons and Households in the United States: Third Quarter 2008 — Examines the roles of government-sponsored benefit programs and the labor market in helping people cope with the recession. Specifically, it presents data on average monthly income, participation in government-sponsored social welfare or insurance programs and labor force activity during the period. The data are from the 2008 Survey of Income and Program Participation; they do not supersede the official income estimates released in September 2009. (Tentatively scheduled for release in January.)

America's Families and Living Arrangements: 2009 — The latest portrait of the American family, these tables give us insights into recent trends in household and family composition and living arrangements. This news release examines the effect that unemployment is having on families. Other information to be found in the tables includes the number of children living with two parents, the number of children living with grandparents, median age at first marriage, the number of stay-at-home moms and the number of mixed-race couples. (Tentatively scheduled for release in January.)

Home-Based Workers in the United States: 2005 — This set of tables describes the type of employment, occupations, earnings, work schedules and other characteristics of those who work at home and compares them with the overall workforce and those workers who do not work at home. The data are from the 2005 Survey of Income and Program Participation. (Tentatively scheduled for release in January.)

Voting and Registration in the Election of November 2008 — This report examines levels of voting and registration in the most recent presidential election, the characteristics of citizens who reported either registering or voting in the election and the reasons why some registered individuals did not vote. The data are based on the November 2008 Current Population Survey. (Tentatively scheduled for release in January.)

Facts for Features

Irish-American Heritage Month (March) and St. Patrick's Day (March 17) — You may not find a pot of gold at the end of this edition of Facts for Features, but you will find it useful and informative nonetheless. It is filled with statistical information from the Census Bureau's demographic and economic subject areas on the nation's Irish-American population and other facets of this celebration of all things Irish. (Scheduled for release Jan. 5.)

Women's History Month (March) — In commemoration of this annual observance highlighting and celebrating the varied and historic accomplishments of women, this edition provides statistical information on topics such as earnings, education, business ownership, voting, occupations, military service and marriage. (Scheduled for release Jan. 5.)

Super Bowl XLIV (Feb. 7) — IAn array of statistics from the Census Bureau's demographic subject areas relating to the 44th edition of our most celebrated sporting event. The game has evolved into the nation's most-watched television broadcast of the year and the day on which it occurs, Super Bowl Sunday, into a de facto national observance. Includes data for Miami, site of the big game, as well as cities represented by the two participating NFL teams. (Tentatively scheduled for release Jan. 25.)

Profile America and Al Día (Spanish) for December and January — Profile America segments include making the charts in "45 RPM Records" (Jan. 10) and tuning into "A Century of Radio Broadcasting" (Jan. 13).

Demographic

New Year's Day Population — Dec. 29 — The Census Bureau estimated that the U.S. population hit 308,400,408 on Jan. 1, 2010, an increase of 2,606,181, or 0.9 percent, from New Year's Day 2009. It is estimated that a birth occurs every eight seconds in the United States and one death every 12 seconds. State Population Estimates: July 1, 2009 — Dec. 23 — Texas gained 478,000 people between July 1, 2008, and July 1, 2009, the largest increase of any state. Wyoming showed the largest percentage growth, climbing 2.12 percent to 544,270. The Census Bureau announced its final set of state population estimates before the official 2010 Census reapportionment counts to be released in December 2010. 2009 3rd Quarter Summary of State and Local Government Tax Revenue — Dec. 29 — This summary shows quarterly tax revenue data from property, sales, license, income (individual and corporate) and other taxes. Data are shown for individual state governments as well as national-level estimates of total state and local taxes, including 12-month calculations. 2007 Commodity Flow Survey — Dec. 22 — This survey produces data on the movement of goods in the United States by value, weight, average miles per shipment, mode of transportation and type of commodity shipped for manufacturing, mining, wholesale and select retail establishments. A separate report contains data on hazardous material shipments by hazard class, mode of transportation, states of origin and other characteristics. This survey is part of the 2007 Economic Census.
