SUBSTITUTE SCHOOL HEALTH AIDE

School Year 2007-2008

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• EDUCATION
  • Possession of a high school diploma (or equivalent) which demonstrated the ability to read, comprehend and apply written directions, a high degree of verbal skill, and the ability to perform basic mathematical computations, including percentages and averages.
    
    
• EXPERIENCE
  • One (1) year of continuous work experience involving working with children, youth and adults.  The work experience must have demonstrated the individual’s ability to work independently with minimal supervision; to follow oral and written instructions; prepare simple reports; and to communicate orally effectively.
    
    
• * CERTIFICATION - Required at the time of employment
  • Current American Red Cross certification in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or equivalent.
    
    * If you are selected as a Substitute School Health Aide, and do not hold current certificates, the DOE will provide training.  The dates and times will be announced later.
    
    
• DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • The primary function of the School Health Aide is to provide first aid and emergency care to the school-aged population.  The School Health Aide will provide information regarding health problems to the Registered Nurse or RN supervisor.  The School Health Aide will provide care and services to enhance the health of this population so as to maximize their educational opportunities.
    
    
  • The School Health Aide is under the general administrative supervision of the School Principal and under the clinical/technical supervision of an assigned Department of Health (DOH) Registered Nurse (RN) or Nurse Supervisor. 
    
    
  • The School Health Aide's work is generally performed in the health room of an assigned school.
    
    
• EMPLOYEE BACKGROUND CHECK
  • If you are selected as a Substitute School Health Aide, you will be required to complete the Department’s fingerprinting and criminal history background check prior to employment or attending training.
    
    

HOW TO APPLY

• APPLICATION.  Obtain Substitute School Health Aide application (DOE Form SSHA) from the school in which you wish to work or online (below). 
  
  Documents to submit: 
  • Completed application form
  • Copy of social security card
  • Tuberculosis test clearance with expiration date within one (1) year
  •  of your initial application date.
  • Current American Red Cross certification in first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or equivalent, if you already possess the proper certification
  • Copy of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license, if required.

  Only complete application packets which include the application, Social Security card and TB test clearance will be accepted.  Please send your complete application packet to:

After the processing of your application, you and the school that you applied to will be notified of your entry to the Substitute School Health Aide pool or training program.

 

BENEFITS

Substitute School Health Aides are not eligible to participate in health benefits or the Employees' Retirement System.  However, you may participate in the Section 403(b), Tax-Sheltered Annuity Program.  Wages are subject to Social Security and Medicare taxes.
