U.S. Labor Department cites Cordia Corp., Midwest Marketing Group Inc. of Fremont, Neb., for child labor violations

OMAHA, Neb. -- Cordia Corp., Midwest Marketing Group Inc. of Fremont, Neb., doing business as Midwest Marketing, has paid $6,930 in civil money penalties for violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act’s (FLSA) child labor provisions disclosed during a recent investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division.

Midwest Marketing, a telemarketing call center, has been cited for violations of the FLSA’s hours-time standards.

“Youth workers gain valuable experience and make great contributions, but employers must comply with applicable federal and state child labor laws,” said Percella Maupins, the Wage and Hour Division’s district director in Des Moines, Iowa. “These laws help ensure the safety of our youth workforce and strike a balance between work and school.”

The investigation found that seven 15-year-old employees typically worked until 10 p.m., in violation of regulations which state in part that 14- and 15-year-olds may work during nonschool hours, but no later than 7 p.m., except between June 1 and Labor Day, when they may work until 9 p.m.

A 2004 investigation at the same telemarketing call center found 11 similar violations of the FLSA’s hours-time standards.
