U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) began its first outreach effort to local area colleges and universities for the 2011 fall semester, with a recent trip to Gallaudet University to conduct an informational seminar. Gallaudet University is the world's only university in which all programs and services are specifically designed to accommodate deaf and hard of hearing students. On July 26, 2010, President Barack Obama signed Executive Order (E.O.) 13548 to increase the number of individuals with disabilities in the federal government. The E.O. calls for the number of disabled employees in the federal sector to increase by 100,000 by the end of the year 2014. CBP has determined that to meet its goals in conjunction with E.O. 13548, that it would have to increase its number of disabled employees from 2.09% of the total workforce, up to 3.2% of the total workforce or roughly 647 new hires. Establishing this relationship with Gallaudet is part of multi-tiered plan to help CBP accomplish this goal. Coordinated by the Office of Diversity and Civil Rights, Office of Training and Development presenter Quincy Bathersfield held a session in the Student Academic Center to inform students about the mission of CBP and promoting CBP as a career choice.

“The event was a success and plans are being made to have more informational sessions as well as classroom visits,” said Narvel Gaddis, DCR management and program analyst. “This year, classroom visits at Gallaudet and other schools will consist of CBP personnel from various offices addressing students whose academic programs relate to jobs performed by CBP officers, Border Patrol agents or CBP Agriculture Specialists. This could include hosts of students ranging from criminal justice to communications to political science to biology to computer science students.”

Presenting CBP 101: An Introduction to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Quincy Bathersfield, OTD Human Resources Specialist in the Distance Learning Technology Branch, gave students a brief overview of CBP’s mission. Bathersfield then spoke about the work done by OTD and how it assists CBP in achieving its mission by offering leadership and direction of all CBP training programs. Quincy Bathersfield also spoke on his role within OTD, such as managing the CBP Virtual Learning Center (VLC), a Human Resource System that supports CBP management with ensuring CBP personnel obtain applicable training in support of CBP’s mission and career development/enhancement.

This event would not have been possible without the participation of Gallaudet’s Career Center and Monica Garvin, Employer Relations Specialist.
