How it Works with TRICARE

By law, TRICARE pays claims only after all other health insurances pay. How your other health insurance (OHI) works with TRICARE depends on who you are or which plan you are using. For the most accurate information, please enter your profile now.

Active Duty Service Members (Including Activated National Guard and Reserve Members)
You may not use other health insurance. TRICARE is your primary payer.

TRICARE for Life
If you use TRICARE For Life in the U.S. or a U.S. Territory, Medicare processes the claim and forwards it to your OHI. Once your OHI processes the claim, you must file a paper claim with the TRICARE For Life contractor. The contractor will process the claim and pay TRICARE's portion of the claim directly to you.

If you use TRICARE For Life overseas, you should follow your OHI plan's rules getting care and file claims with them first.

All Other Beneficiaries/Health Plan Options
You should follow your OHI plan's rules for getting care and file claims with them first. If there is an amount your OHI does not cover, you can file the claim with TRICARE for reimbursement.

It's important to follow your OHI's requirements. If your OHI denies a claim for failure to follow their rules, such as obtaining care without authorization or using a non-network provider, TRICARE may also deny your claim.
