Diplomacy in Action

Office of Afghanistan and Pakistan (INL/AP)

The Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs' Office of Afghanistan and Pakistan is focused on directing and overseeing critical foreign assistance programs which support the justice sectors in two countries which are central to our national security interests. Our team is made up of Civil and Foreign Service officers, contractors, and participants in various State Department Student Programs. Because of our key role in developing and implementing policies, we work closely with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), the Department of Defense (DOD), the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. Our work, however, extends beyond just policy-making in Washington D.C. Members of our office travel to Afghanistan and Pakistan and attend meetings with allied nations throughout the world.

Our programs are aimed at helping provide justice and security to the people of Afghanistan and Pakistan and we seek to develop the capacity of these countries to provide for their own needs in these areas. Our programs help ensure the rule of law, attack corruption and other crimes, support counternarcotics efforts, and provide law enforcement training. In Afghanistan we are engaged in a variety of programs including training local police forces, helping create programs to reduce poppy cultivation, providing educational advancements to the community especially women and children, funding drug rehabilitation centers, and helping create a justice program that the Afghan people can trust. Our programs in Pakistan are just as diverse. Border security programs, law enforcement reform and capacity building, and counternarcotics are our three primary areas of focus. Our programs are not just designed to give the Afghan and Pakistan people jobs - our programs are aimed at giving them justice. And by promoting the rule of law in these countries, we are making the American people more secure at home in the United States.
