Anderson & Cantwell

Anderson and Cantwell- August 22, 2012

From Stef Claus, Legislative Correspondent

In Cantwell, Janelle and I kicked off our Mobile Office at the Broad Pass Café. We heard from small business owner and borough assemblyman Gordon Carlston and other Cantwell residents about subsistence, parks, and contracting issues. We also enjoyed owner Jennifer Frank’s famous fries. Janelle and I saw the two windmills financed by the Recovery Act, supported by Senator Begich, which now power Cantwell’s tribal hall.

We made at stop at Tatlanika Trading Post, where we chatted with employee Jamie Wagner, who both Senator Begich and I had met previously in DC. In her capacity as a teacher with the Anderson school, Jamie led a group of students from Anderson and Cantwell in their Close Up trip to DC. I knew she looked familiar.

In Anderson, we enjoyed clear skies and heard from residents about Eielson Air Force Base, veterans’ issues, Pebble Mine, and Medicare. It’s been a delight to talk with so many Alaskans in this beautiful part of our great state.

Craig

Michael Johnson and Bob Weinstein with Bryce Dahlstrom at Viking Lumber in Klawock.

Craig - August 17, 2012

From Bob Weinstein, Ketchikan Field Representative

Washington-based energy and natural resources staffer Michael Johnson and I were delayed in Ketchikan by fog, so Stef Claus ably kicked off Senator Begich's Mobile Office in her hometown of Craig at the Water Street Cafe. Stef is a legislative correspondent in Senator Begich's Washington, DC office. Michael and I arrived in time to have a cup of coffee and talk with the last few guests.

From there we had a good exchange with the Mayor, Dennis Watson, and City Manager, Jon Bolling, on a number of Craig priorities. After a quick lunch at Papa's Pizza, the group fielded questions in an informal dialogue with Prince of Wales Community Advisory Council members from Thorne Bay, Kasaan, Craig, and Klawock on topics ranging from sea otters to Secure Rural Schools funding. We finished the day with stops at a couple of successful small businesses, The Clothes Company, where Stef once worked, and Viking Lumber with Bryce Dahlstrom, pictured above, where we talked about timber supply, roadless issues and biomass.
