Now that the comment period has closed for Leading Change: A Plan for SAMHSA’s Roles and Actions 2011 – 2014, SAMHSA is reviewing the feedback received and developing a final version of this plan. Nearly 3000 people participated in SAMHSA’s web-based Strategic Initiatives Forum, submitting almost 2500 ideas and comments and casting more than 23,000 votes. In addition SAMHSA staff, Federal partners, stakeholder groups, and National Advisory Council members provided written feedback. As I have traveled around the country I have said that behavioral health is essential to health – for individuals, families, and communities, as well as for the Nation’s health delivery systems, and I truly believe this. SAMHSA’s mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America’s communities. SAMHSA, together with many partners, has demonstrated that prevention works, treatment is effective, and people recover from mental and substance use disorders.
