The Appalachian Health Summit

The Second Annual Appalachian Health Summit will to take place in Athens, Ohio, September 28th and 29th, 2012. The summit features nationally known and respected speakers offering proven approaches for health professionals and members of the community to promote positive lifestyle changes. The goal of this event is to reach over 600 individuals, including healthcare professionals, and to promote and support healthy living throughout the Appalachian region.

James O. Prochaska, PhDJames O. Prochaska, PhD – Dr. Prochaska is Director of the Cancer Prevention Research Center and Professor of Clinical and Health Psychology at the University of Rhode Island. He is the author of over 300 publications and 3 books, including Changing for Good.  He is internationally recognized for his work as a developer of the stage model of behavior change. Dr. Prochaska has won numerous awards, including a Top Five Most Cited Authors in Psychology from the American Psychology Society, an Innovator’s Award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and a Medal of Honor from the American Cancer Society.

Michael Roizen, MDMichael Roizen, MD – As Chair of the Cleveland Clinic Wellness Institute, Dr. Roizen practices anesthesiology and internal medicine using the RealAge metric he developed to motivate patients. Dr. Roizen also serves as the Cleveland Clinic;’s Chief Wellness Officer and is a Professor of Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. His resume includes over 1,400 lectures to professional medical groups, has appeared dozens of times in the national media, and is the author of over 165 peer-reviewed publications. He also wrote the award-winning “RealAge” book series for general audiences and is a coauthor of the “YOU” series of book along with Dr. Mehmet Oz.

 

 

 

Caldwell Esselstyn, MDCaldwell Esselstyn, MD – Dr. Esselstyn has been associated with the Cleveland Clinic since 1968. During that time he served as President of the Staff and as a member of the Board of Governors. In 2005, he became the first recipient of the Benjamin Spock Award for Compassion in Medicine. His work includes a benchmark long-term nutritional study, “A strategy to arrest and reverse coronary artery disease,” which examined the role of diet in the recovery of severely ill patients. Dr. Esselstyn is author of numerous peer-reviewed articles and the general audience book, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, and was featured in the critically acclaimed documentary, Forks Over Knives.

 

 

Chef AJChef AJ – Chef AJ is a chef and culinary instructor based in Los Angeles, California.  She received culinary training from the Living Light Culinary Arts Institute and has earned a certificate in plant based nutrition from Cornell University. Chef AJ is also author of the cookbook Unprocessed: How to achieve vibrant health and your ideal weight. She has followed a plant-based diet for 33 years and lectures nation-wide on easy, delicious ways to incorporate more fresh fruits and vegetables into a healthy diet.
