Bee Gees up for 1979 Grammy Awards

Before the 1979 Grammy Awards, Times pop music critic Robert Hilburn reported in a column on Feb. 11 of that year:

The Bee Gees’ “Staying Alive” should win the Grammy Thursday night as the best record of 1978. That’s a prediction, and a value judgment.

The Bee Gees-dominated “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack also should win a Grammy as the year’s best album. That’s just a prediction. …

One thing is for certain: Barry, Maurice and Robin Gibb — The Bee Gees — will accept any awards they receive with smiles on the faces. Unlike artists who ridicule awards ceremonies, the Bee Gees call the nomination the high point of their long career.

Says Barry Gibb, 32, “It’s a dream come true.”

On Feb. 15, 1979, the Bee Gees won five Grammy Awards including two for their work on the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack, which was named album of the year. However, Billy Joel won record of the year for “Just the Way You Are.”
