My husband and I have lived here for three years and just visited the NC Museum of Art yesterday. I must admit I don't know a lot about the museums history. I'm under the impression that the building is new. If that's the case I understand the lack of sculptor and/or adornment of some kind on the grounds as you walk towards the entrance. There was work being done in the park area so I'm sure things are being added. It's a little stark and blank, however, it is January. We went to the museum for the Art Deco Car Show. It was wonderful. As you walk into the exhibit there is a wall that explains ten years ( I think ) from the 30's into the 40's, of history so you can place the cars within what was happening in the country at the time. I thought this was very interesting. The cars and motorcycles were unique and stunning. I thought the way the cars were displayed highlighted them beautifully. My only criticism is that I wished there was more. The exhibit was small. A minor criticism for a very well done show. My only other thought, as a few others have mentioned, is that the gift shop is inadequate. It's too small for people to move around comfortably, therefore, you can't really look and appreciate what's there. I had to wait outside the shop for my husband because it was just too crowded. We were there during the week in the afternoon. I can't imagine what it's like on a weekend or when there's an especially popular event. I would have bought something but I didn't enjoy the shopping experience so I left.
