BLM to Initiate Closure During Air Show (09-14-12)
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Bureau of Land Management is scheduled to close public lands surrounding the Grand Junction Regional Airport Sept. 20-23 as a safety precaution during air show.
The West Star Aviation Air Show is scheduled to take place Sept. 21-23 at the Grand Junction Regional Airport. Aircraft participating in aerobatic maneuvers will operate in the area surrounding the airport beginning Sept. 20. Federal aviation regulations require a designated aerobatic perimeter for aircraft to conduct aerobatic maneuvers. Closure of the public lands located within the aerobatic perimeter is necessary to ensure public safety during the air show. All motorized vehicle, mechanized vehicle and foot travel on BLM lands surrounding the airport will be closed Sept. 20-23 in order to provide a required designated aerobatic perimeter.
BLM lands will be closed 3/4 of a mile parallel to the main airport runway from 27 1/4 to 30 Road. Entry will be restricted during this public safety closure in order to provide a safe zone for the event participants and visitors. The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
