History
Founded in 1991, DeCA is a 'purple' agency and is responsible for all commissaries regardless of military service.
Prior to 1991, each military service ran its own commissaries.
Who can shop?
Authorized shoppers include active duty, retirees, National Guard and Reserves and their family members.
Savings
Customers buy groceries at cost plus a 5 percent surcharge which is used to fund commissary construction and renovations.
A family of four shopping regularly can save more than $4,509 on their total annual grocery bill.
A single service member shopping regularly can save more than $1,553 a year.
