The thundering roar of a cannon, the gentle hum of cicadas, the soothing crash of the waves on the shore — these are the sounds of the Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve. Centered in and around one of the Atlantic Coast's largest urban...areas, Jacksonville, the preserve offers glimpses of old Florida. The 46,000-acre respite from the hustle and bustle of life can transport visitors back in time. http://www.nps.gov/getaways/See More- RecommendationsSee All

- Patrick McDougallGet an annual pass (bargain!) and head west... or stay and explore there if you're already living over yonder! Our vacation that ended just over a week ago included the north part of Yellowstone (their "grand canyon" is sooo different from the geyser area), Little Big Horn National Monument (every American should go there and LEARN), Devil's Tower National Monument, Badlands National Park (gorgeous!), Fort Laramie National Historic Site, and Rocky Mountain National Park (stunning, and soooo many great trails!). In the past we also visited four other absolutely amazing national parks out west-- Zion and Bryce Canyon in Utah, Glacier in Montana, and North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Another less known gem is Capitol Reef National Park, a bit north of Bryce and Zion in Utah. Great treasures all!about 3 months ago
