VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System

Pharmacy

The VA Pittsburgh pharmacy processes over 4,500 prescriptions daily. Many of these prescriptions are filled by the Central Mailout Pharmacy (CMOP). Prescriptions may be refilled by phone, mail, or the internet. Prescriptions will not come in the mail automatically.  Prescriptions are mailed only if a refill has been requested by the patient or if a provider renews or enters a new prescription order.

NOTE: The prescription label will note how many refills are remaining.  Please ensure there are refills left prior to using any of these refill options.  If there are NO refills remaining, or if the prescription was written more than 12 months ago (6 months for controlled substance medications) and has expired, please contact your VA provider to obtain a new prescription.

Automated Refill Line

An automated refill line is available for all VA Pittsburgh patients. Please call one of the following numbers:

  • 412-822-3140
  • from outside the Pittsburgh area, call toll-free 1-866-4VA-PITT (1-866-482-7488), enter 223140# once you hear the automated attendant
  1. Wait for the automated attendant to answer
  2. Enter Social Security number followed by #
  3. Press 2 for Pharmacy Options
  4. For refills, press 1 and follow instructions
  5. To check prescription status, press 2 and follow instructions
  6. To speak to pharmacy staff members, press 8

When using the automated refill line, all refills should be ordered at least ten days prior to when the refill is due to insure prompt processing and delivery time.

Refill by Mail

Every prescription supplied by the VA comes with a refill request form and pre-addressed label for VA Pharmacy.  For medications that you take every day (i.e., maintenance medications), mail back the refill request form that came with your prescription as soon as you get home with your new medication(s).   Do not leave the form at the pharmacy when you pick up your new medications, because the computer system will not take your refill request the same day that you receive your new medication(s).  Returning the refill request form as soon as possible will ensure that you receive your medication the next time it is due.  For other medications that you take as needed, mail in the refill request form at least two weeks (14 days) before you will run out of medication.

Internet Refill

Prescriptions may also be filled online using VA's MyHealtheVet program. You will need a user id and password to log in. If you do not have one, you can easily get one by creating your personal profile.  Visit http://www.myhealth.va.gov.

Refills at VA Pittsburgh Pharmacy

All veterans are encouraged to refill their prescriptions by phone or Internet. Because of our patient workload, prescriptions cannot be refilled at the main VA Pittsburgh pharmacy window.
