7/25/2012 - JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, TEXAS (AFNS) -- Eligible active duty officers interested in U.S. Air Force Academy instructor opportunities have until Aug. 31 to apply, Air Force Personnel Center officials announced.

"This special duty assignment is a controlled, three-year maximum tour and officers must be released by their Air Force Personnel Center core officer assignment team in order to compete," said Angel Espinosa, the AFPC Air Force Academy faculty assignments chief.

To be eligible applicants must be first lieutenants through lieutenant colonels with three or more years time on station between June 1 and Dec. 1, 2013. If overseas, applicants must be eligible to return from overseas between May and December 2013.

Eligible officers may apply for dean of faculty, preparatory school and athletic department positions. Limited positions at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., and the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md., are also available.

"As expressed in the USAFA mission statement, this is a great opportunity for officers interested in educating, training and inspiring men and women to become officers of character," Espinosa said.

Applications, due to the AFPC Academic and Special Utilization Branch, must include a completed Air Force Form 3849, PME/AFIT/RTFB Officer Worksheet, he added. AFPC will notify officers selected by Jan. 15, 2013.

The AF does have one enlisted instructor slot at the USAFA Prep School. The slot is for a Math teacher I know this because I was in that position. I advocated utilizing the enlisted personnel going to AFIT to teach at the academy. I wish the AF would do this I know we have AMT's but more SNCO instructors would be great at the academy for shaping our future leaders.

I totally agree with the comments below. Unfortunately it is yet another opportunity for enlisted career enhancement squandered. When will the AF get over the paradigm that only officers can teach those to be officers Qualified NCOs and SNCOs have that practical experience plus the advanced degrees to make them the best teachers out there. As previously mentioned this will teach the cadets to listen to what their enlisted people have to tell them. We all know that no officer gets to where they are at without the help of their enlisted force. Why not instill that into the cadets from Day 1

It would be great if the tours would be open to Guardsmen as a Title 10 Tour. Alot of experience out there not being tapped.

I concur with all comments thus far. As a retired SNCO with a Masters degree and teaching experience I would have relished the idea of making a difference in this venue. Concerned TSgt you are spot on a lot of the old ways are still the most effective. SNCO's must stand up and fulfill their obligation not be worried so much about making the next stripe. Take back the power that has been given away. Sounds a little like my retirement speech.

There are NCOSNCOs embedded in each cadet squadron called Academy Military Training NCOs. They provide the cadets first experience interacting with NCOs. Its a special duty assignment if you are interested.

Ah yes the old it's not as good the old days line. Great to hear coming from a TSgt who has 11 years time-in-service. And to the Chief who thinks we need more NCO professors...I know a few NCO/SNCOss that have graduate degrees, but they are all from schools like UofPhoenix or American Military. Not exactly the kind of degrees that college accreditors look highly upon when they are evaluating a university's faculty.

SNCO and NCO instructors have a distinct advantage of letting Zoomies start treating enlisted like garbage from the very beginning. Imagine how much more mission ready they'll be if they've had 4-5 years to practice the phraseology of telling enlisted people of all ranks how much better they are than them? Train like you fight.

I concur with CMSgt Retired. It pains me to say this not many of today's young O's listen to seasoned NCO's. The Air Force has changed and we need to bring back a few old ways of doing things.

Agree with JustAnObserver but I would add that the opportunity to teach at the AFA could be opened up to NCOsSNCOs who have their advanced degrees. Because when a new Lieutenant hits the field it's the NCOsSNCOs who do most of the teaching and mentoring--why not in the classroom

There are many officers and more than a few NCOs in the Reserve and ANG with PhDs or Masters degrees who have both teaching experience and military service. Perhaps there should be more of a push to recruit from that pool especially for some of the more esoteric or harder to fill disciplines Time for Total Force to become more walk and less talk.
