Aviation Management Program
Managing natural resources and providing fire protection on vast areas of land is a big job. To meet this challenge, the Bureau of Land Management relies on aircraft to accomplish many of our missions. Both airplanes and helicopters are used to manage wildland fires and wildlife habitat, map natural resources, and carry out law enforcement missions. Helicopters are used to transport resource specialists to remote areas. From the air, public lands can be easily monitored, evaluated and protected.
In the New Mexico BLM organization it is policy that all aviation operations will be conducted efficiently and safely. This will be achieved through utilization of sound aviation management practices. Key components of aviation safety include proactive hazard identification, application of risk management techniques, and an active accident prevention program.
To accomplish our mission safety and efficiently, the New Mexico BLM aviation management organization provides leadership and direction in all programs utilizing aircraft resources. The State Office has a State Aviation Manager who serves as the senior aviation expert for all aviation activities under BLM New Mexico’s jurisdiction. Each District/Field Office organization has a Unit Aviation Manager who provides aviation leadership and technical oversight for field aviation operations. All employees involved in aircraft operations receive training commensurate with their level of responsibility.
BLM aviation operations are guided by aviation plans which are prepared at the local, state, and national levels. These plans can be accessed through the following links.
