Year Round Fire Restrictions

The Miles City Interagency Dispatch Center (MCC) is an initial attack dispatch center for wildland fires. MCC is located in Miles City, Montana and incorporates the following cooperating agencies: Bureau of Land Management – Miles City Field Office, United States Forest Service – Custer National Forest, United States Fish & Wildlife Service – Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge and Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge, and Montana Department of Natural Resources & Conservation – Eastern Land Office and portions of the Northeastern Land Office and Southern Land Office.

The Eastern Montana Fire Zone (EMFZ) encompasses North Dakota and South Dakota Field Offices, as well as the Miles City Field Office. The EMFZ covers 3.1 million acres, and its boundaries extend from the Canadian border to the Wyoming state line for a distance of 300 miles. The western boundaries extend from the Musselshell River to the western portions of North and South Dakota for a distance of 275 miles. The elevation within the EMFZ ranges from 5,200 feet at the western boundaries to 1,960 feet in the east.

The EMFZ is divided into five wildland fire protection areas: Miles City, Jordan, Fort Howes, Ekalaka, and Camp Crook, South Dakota. Each area has a centrally located fire station and staff for effective initial attack suppression. The fire operations season peaks in June with approximately 60 seasonal employees hired for initial attack.
