Big Sheep Creek Back Country Byway
Passing beneath the high rock cliffs of Big Sheep Creek Canyon, you can look down into the clear, deep pools of spring-fed Big Sheep Creek. Bighorn sheep, deer, and elk can often be spotted in the mornings and evenings. The 50-mile two-lane gravel road has a short stretch of one-lane dirt surface. Road conditions vary dramatically, from very good to impassable, depending on the weather. From the south, the route passes the high rock cliffs of Big Sheep Creek Canyon. The byway then enters a long valley bounded on one side by the Bitterroot Range and Tendoy Mountains. Side roads lead to mountains and excellent hiking opportunities. Activities: Sightseeing, wildlife viewing, camping, fishing, pleasure-driving. Facilities: Deadwood Gulch Campground on the lower end of Big Sheep Creek provides a rustic campground setting with about six sites. Toilet, fire rings and picnic tables are provided, but no water. Location/Access: The northern terminus is Montana Hwy 324 west of Clark Canyon Dam. Southern access is via the Dell Exit from I-15, 24 miles north of the Montana-Idaho border. Fees: None.
