Price Field Office Proposes to Convert Desolation-Gray Canyons River Permit System to Recreation.gov

The BLM Price Field Office is announcing a 30-day opportunity for the public to provide input on proposed changes to its river permitting system for the Desolation and Gray Canyons of the Green River.  The proposal would convert the existing permitting system for private boaters from a first-come, first-serve call-in reservation process, to an online lottery reservation process on the Recreation.gov.  If the proposal is approved, private river permit lottery applications for the 2013 season would be accepted between December 1, 2012 and January 31, 2013.  A detailed analysis of the proposed changes is included in the BLM Price Field Office’s Draft Business Plan for Desolation Gray Canyons of the Green River.  All public comments must be received in writing via letter at BLM Price Field Office, 125 South 600 West, Price, Utah, 84501 or email at mblocker@blm.gov by November 10, 2012.

Know Before You Go - Nine Mile Canyon Road Improvement Project

Nine Mile Canyon RoadDuring 2011-2012, 36 miles of the Nine Mile Canyon Road will be under construction for the purpose of improving the road to further protect cultural resources, improve drainage, and satisfy public safety standards.  W.W. Clyde Co. will be installing drainage pipe, widening the existing road, and hard surfacing the road using a double chip seal.  An environmentally friendly dust suppressant is being used on the road to control dust until the chip seal is applied.  Please expect delays in portions of the canyon until the project is completed.  Attached is a Fact Sheet containing more information concerning this project.

San Rafael River Canyon
"The Wedge Overlook"
San Rafael River Canyon with Windowblind Butte in the distance

The Price Field Office is located in the midsection of Utah--the gateway to the red-rock country of the San Rafael Swell. The swell as been described as the jagged remains of a dinosaur backbone, an exposed sandstone coral reef, and a stone saw blade.

No matter how you describe this place, it is a desolate but fascinating country. Traveling east, you’ll find the Green River, a premiere river trip in Utah’s deepest canyon that runs through Desolation and Gray Canyons.

Nine-Mile Canyon just west of the Green River is a major representative area of the prehistoric Fremont Culture where one can see panels of rock art and, if you look closely, some well-hidden storage bins.
