Botany

The FY 2002 Interior Appropriations Act directed DOI and USDA agencies to develop a long-term program to supply and manage native plant materials for restoration and rehabilitation projects on Federal lands.

The goal of the interagency program is to promote partnerships and cooperation among Federal and State agencies to develop a self-sustaining long-term program to supply and manage native plant materials along with partners in private industry.

Conservation-Related Activities of The Berry Botanic Garden and Seed Bank Holdings

We conducted two germination trials using seeds of rare taxa in 2008. In the first trial, we focused on obtaining baseline information on germination requirements for species we have not attempted to germinate previously. In the second trial, we re-moistened seeds used in previous germination trials in order to examine the possibility that previously ungerminated seeds remain viable.

Certain areas of OR/WA BLM lands are officially recognized for their outstanding natural or cultural features. These special places often have spectacular wildflowers and uncommon, intact native plant communities.

The BLM has specially designated such areas to protect and prevent irreparable damage. Our botanists are actively involved in the Interdisciplinary Teams that manage these important areas.
