John Day River Study

Welcome to the John Day River Study Webpage.

The Prineville Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in partnership with The Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs, Oregon Department of State Lands, Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the John Day Coalition of Counties (the John Day Planning Team) has responsibility for managing the 147-mile John Day Wild and Scenic River from Service Creek to Tumwater Falls in north-central Oregon. Together these partners are working to preserve both resource health and a positive visitor experience into the future.

The 2001 John Day River Management Plan (the River Plan) decided that a Limits of Acceptable Change Study (the Study) and related environmental analysis would be used to determine the appropriate levels for boating use as required by the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act, and make other recreation management decisions. This Study is presented in more detail in the links below.

The BLM is beginning the preparation of the John Day River Study Environmental Analysis (EA) to look at management actions to address boating encounters and campsite availability when the number of river users exceeds capacity. We would like to hear your ideas and comments on possible management actions. If you would like to comment, please review the attached John Day River Study and provide your comments by August 30, 2008.
