UNITED STATES TRUSTEE PROGRAM MOURNS

DEATH OF UNITED STATES TRUSTEE MARY E. MAY

            WASHINGTON, D.C.–The United States Trustee Program mourns the death of United States Trustee Mary E. May of Wichita, Kansas, on March 25, 2006.

            “It is with profound sadness that I report the passing of U.S. Trustee Mary May after a heroic battle against leukemia,” Cliff White, Acting Director of the Executive Office for U.S. Trustees, stated today. “Mary distinguished herself as a U.S. Trustee by her exemplary work, good humor, and friendship to us all. She will be greatly missed not only for her professional and managerial skills and talents, but for her lively demeanor and collegial nature.”

             Among Ms. May’s many notable achievements were her contributions to making the new bankruptcy reform law work effectively, revitalizing the criminal fraud prosecution program in her region, and achieving other goals to improve the bankruptcy system. In addition, she willingly shared her extensive bankruptcy knowledge and experience in her many presentations and training sessions.

            Ms. May served as the U.S. Trustee for Kansas, Oklahoma, and New Mexico (Region 20) since her appointment in September 2002. Before joining the U.S. Trustee Program, she was a partner with the Wichita law firm Fleeson, Gooing, Coulson & Kitch, L.L.C., and she served as a Chapter 7 panel trustee in the District of Kansas. Ms. May served on the Kansas Board for Discipline of Attorneys from 1996 to 2002, and was a long-time member of the Wichita Bar Association’s Ethics Committee.

            The U.S. Trustee Program is the component of the Justice Department that protects the integrity of the bankruptcy system by overseeing case administration and litigating to enforce the bankruptcy laws.
