Officials announce military service awards nominees

2/22/2011 - RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas  -- Air Force officials recently announced its four nominees for the 2010 Government Employees Insurance Company Military Service Awards.

The annual GEICO Military Service Awards recognize enlisted service members from all military service branches, active duty, National Guard and Reserve, for their contributions to military and civilian communities.

The drug and alcohol abuse prevention category nominee is Tech. Sgt. Jeannie Washington from Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii. Sergeant Washington coordinated the efforts of various federal and local agencies to support Red Ribbon Week and Joint Base Alcohol and Child Abuse Awareness month earning Hickam AFB a $950,000 federal grant.

The fire safety and prevention category nominee is Staff Sgt. Douglas Reedy Jr. from Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Va. Sergeant Reedy conducted more than 40 fire-safety drills and sustained 162 flightline extinguishers helping save three aircraft and $6 billion in Air Force assets.

The traffic safety and accident prevention category nominee is Master Sgt. Donald Kuehl from Thule Air Base, Greenland. While supervising 51 Airmen, Sergeant Kuehl earned five manpower positions and executed $900,000 in security upgrades.

The Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard category nominee is Senior Master Sgt. David Dunn from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C. Sergeant Dunn led his quality assurance team to exceed major command and higher headquarters maintenance standardization and evaluation-program requirements.

GEICO officials will select an award recipient in each category from all nominees submitted by each of the military services. The recipients will be honored at a ceremony in Washington, D.C.
