A future soldier
October 15, 2012
I knew I wanted to follow in the footsteps of a few family members and join the military since a very young age. However, when I intended doing it at the age of 19 and my mother objected to the idea (because I was too young), I took it as sort of a sign and opted for College instead.
After an Associate’s and a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, I didn’t know exactly which path to take. I considered the idea of going into the force, as many of my friends from College had done, but somehow that wasn’t enough. I enrolled in Grad school, but even then something was still missing. It had been years since the military topic was brought up at home, and I decided to give it another try.
I went online and researched for days. I knew I wanted to join the Army, but now being 26 years old, I tend to be a bit more cautious about life-changing decisions. I contacted a Recruiter in my area and after numerous meetings and millions of questions (she had a lot of patience with me), I made my decision. I was to join the U.S. Army as a Cryptologic Linguist. I couldn’t be more excited about my future, and this time I had the support of my family and friends. (I guess graduating from College made Mom happy). When I swore in back in April, BCT in January seemed so far away, and now it’s just a couple of months away.
My friends are currently planning farewell parties, and even getting together to already plan their trip to my graduation ceremony. It’s a surreal feeling, but amazing nevertheless.
I can’t wait to finally wear my uniform, become a soldier, and serve my country.
