October 15, 2009 - News Release

BOSTON, Mass. -- Since the July 30 federal disaster declaration in Maine for summer flooding, FEMA has approved over $2.5 Million to fund more than 300 Public Assistance projects.  Federal and state staff continue to work with local officials in formulating and funding the remaining projects.

BOSTON, Mass. -- Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) community education specialists will be participating in Lowe's Safety Saturday. This information-sharing, public safety, preparedness event will be held Saturday, September 26, 10am - 2pm, in Augusta, ME.

AUGUSTA, Maine -- More than $1.2 million in federal aid has been disbursed to help communities recover from the flooding that devastated areas of Maine this summer. The Federal Emergency management Agency (FEMA) and the Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) are assisting local recovery efforts through FEMA's Public Assistance program.  This program provides funding to help communities repair, replace or restore damaged public facilities.  It also helps cover the costs of clean up and emergency actions taken to protect lives or property.

Public Assistance - Dollars Approved

Public Assistance (PA): Disaster grant assistance available for communities to quickly respond to and recover from major disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Emergency Work (Categories A-B): Work that must be performed to reduce or eliminate an immediate threat to life, protect public health and safety, and to protect improved property that is significantly threatened due to disasters or emergencies declared by the President

Permanent Work (Categories C-G): Work that is required to restore a damaged facility, through repair or restoration, to its pre-disaster design, function, and capacity in accordance with applicable codes and standards

*Dollars Approved: Assistance dollars approved but not necessarily disbursed.

*Dollars Obligated: Funds made available to the State via electronic transfer following FEMA's final review and approval of Public Assistance projects.
