KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan (19 Feb 11) - More than 55 command sergeants major attended the Command Sergeant Major Sustainment and Equipping Conference at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan, Feb. 14-18, either in person or via video telephone conference, to discuss ways to equip Soldiers and improve the equipment available to Soldiers. The first two days of the conference allowed the leaders from combat units across Afghanistan, Army Material Command, U.S. Army Headquarters and U.S. Central Command to learn from each other by sharing their challenges and successes in theater. The leaders from the states shared their expertise about what their organizations could do for the combatant leaders in theater.

FORT DRUM, N.Y. - Families, friends and fellow Soldiers waited anxiously for members of 514th Maintenance Company to come marching through the doors of Magrath Gym during a redeployment ceremony May 1. The 514th Maintenance Company was deployed for a yearlong mission in Iraq to provide maintenance support. Soldiers did maintenance on everything from wheeled and track vehicles to generators, trailers, calibration and many other areas, said Capt. Christopher Tramontana, company commander.

KABUL - Nestled in the mountainous outskirts of the nation's capital is the Kabul Military Training Center, where more than 8,000 Afghan National Army soldiers can be found training at any given time. KMTC is the main training facility for the ANA Training Command and the "force provider" for Afghanistan's national defense. The center provides initial basic warrior training and advanced combat training for recruits, as well as advanced training for commissioned and noncommissioned officers. "At any time, we have 7,000 soldiers in BWT and 1,000 soldiers in ACT," said Afghan Col. Mohammad Amin-Wahidi, training and education officer, KMTC.

FORT DRUM, N.Y. - In an effort to enhance expeditionary medical readiness capabilities and improve emergency care in a combat environment, Soldiers of 511th Military Police Battalion conducted an exercise April 27 with Company C, 3-10 General Support Aviation Battalion, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade. The exercise required Soldiers from the Guardian Battalion to load and unload "patients" from a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter.

FORT DRUM, N.Y. - Everyone knows air travel can be a hassle - rushing across a massive airport to arrive at your gate just in time to find your flight has been cancelled. For military travelers, the experience can be especially stressful. Many service members in airports have more than travel on their minds. Long layovers or cancelled flights can add to the anxiety of returning to combat or reporting to basic training. Sometimes a troop just needs a place to relax and forget about the stresses of travel. FORT DRUM, N.Y. - Soldiers in 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment competed against each other in their first squadron-sized, Iron Titan Physical Training Competition here April 23. According to Capt. Kamil Sztalkoper, Headquarters and Headquarters Troop commander, this is the first time 365 Soldiers in the squadron have competed against each other. Normally, the competition is held at the platoon level, which ranges from 15-20 Soldiers.

FORT DRUM, N.Y. - Afghanistan features high, rugged mountains and elevations of up to 6,000 feet - very important facts to consider for pilots who are preparing for upcoming deployments. Soldiers with 10th Combat Aviation Brigade have been conducting high-altitude training at Whiteface Mountain, which boasts an elevation of roughly 5,000 feet, in preparation for their deployment to Afghanistan this fall.

Frank assumed command of 3rd Brigade Combat Team while five of the brigade's six battalions welcomed new commanders during a consolidated change of command ceremony Friday on Sexton Field. The ceremony marked a drastic change for the Spartan Soldiers of 3rd BCT. Having returned from a yearlong deployment in December, Soldiers now stand ready to begin their training for yet another deployment, with nearly all new commanders.

"We were committed to not dating, since he was in the military and I was heading to college," Peterson said. "But lo and behold, he deployed to Bosnia in 1999, and two months later we were in love."

CAMP GUERNSEY, Wyo. - Building on previous off-post training and leading into a culminating force-on-force event, Soldiers from 3rd Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment conducted a platoon live-fire exercise at Camp Guernsey, Wyo. April 17. First Lt. Richard Lovering, acting commander of Troop C, 3-89 Cav., said the training objective was to get his Soldiers used to moving in platoon formations and engaging the enemy with live rounds. The mission he gave the Soldiers was to clear a route in preparation for a commander's Key Leader Engagement (KLE) in a village at the end of the training lane.

Dustin Napier, chaplain's assistant, and 94th Brigade Support Battalion cooks attached to "Demon" Troop brought hot "Slugger Steak Sandwiches" to the Troops in the field as part of the chaplain's "morale chow" program.

CAMP GUERNSEY, Wyo. - Mortar men from 3rd Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment conducted a consolidated live-fire exercise while training at Camp Guernsey, Wyo., April 14 and April 15. Mortar crews from A, B and C Troops manned 60mm and 120mm mortar weapons systems for the live-fire exercise as forward observes from squadron Fire Support Teams (FiSTers) provided target coordinates. Sgt. Matthew Leue, Troop C mortar section chief, said the value of the live-fire training is "through the roof," because in Afghanistan, calling for indirect fire is going to be (a) key to keeping their cavalry scouts and infantrymen brethren alive.

FORT DRUM, N.Y. - Author and historian David Barton shared American stories of faith, prayer and moral conviction during Fort Drum's National Prayer Luncheon last week at the Commons. "As we gather here today at this prayer luncheon, (it's worth noting) this is not an unusual thing," Barton said April 14. "This is the character of who we have been as American people and an American military from the very beginning. It's why we've been blessed as a nation - we have acknowledged God."
