    WIESBADEN, Germany - Wiesbaden Soldiers got the first look at a new portable “mini chapel” on Wiesbaden Army Airfield June 28. The easily deployable tent structure, also known as a “sacred shelter” by developers at the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Systems Center, provides units with a small worship facility that can be set up rapidly in the field.

    VERMILLION, S.D. " Members of the South Dakota Army and Air National Guard have worked continuously since May 29, 2011, to battle the Missouri River that threatens to flood several towns in southeastern South Dakota. The rising water is not the only battle on the front lines of this emergency. Another battle is for the moral and spiritual well-being of those involved in times like these during this historic flooding event. Military chaplains rise to this challenge and embrace their calling in the service of others. Armed with a Bible and a mission to serve, chaplain and newly appointed 1st Lt. David Stimes, of Beresford, joined the Chaplain Corps in April 2011. He is currently assigned with the 153rd Engineer Battalion and is now performing ministerial duties in the Dakota Dunes area during the flood relief.

    New stories begin beginnings when old ones end, and the Fort McPherson Protestant Women of the Chapel (PWOC) welcomed a new beginning after closing the book on one of the oldest PWOC chapters in the country. The Fort McPherson PWOC, created Jan. 1, 1960, ended its charter during its final meeting at the Fort McPherson Post Chapel April 28 after more than 50 years of service in the community.

    As part of the Army Sustainment Command's Holocaust Days of Remembrance Observance, Walter Reed, born Werner Rindsberg in WAfA1/4rzberg, Germany, shared the story of his family's persecution by Nazi Germany and his three-year escape through Europe and across the Atlantic Ocean to the United States as a teen. Soon after Reed gained his U.S. citizenship, he was drafted into the Army and shipped out to a war-torn Europe in 1944 serving at the front lines as an interrogator in the 95th Infantry Division. Assigned as part of Gen. George S. Patton's renowned Third Army, the division saw fierce action throughout Northern France and Germany. Reed was the guest speaker for the ASC's May 3 observance in Rock Island Arsenal's Black Hawk Conference Room.

On a recent weekend 22 U.S. Army Africa couples and their 42 children went to Edelweiss Lodge and Resort for a Strong Bonds marriage retreat. "This weekend put our lives on pause so we could breathe each other in again," said Amiia Coffey, whose husband recently returned from deployment. "It let us step away from our crazy lives to focus on each other and how different we are."
