    Fort Shafter, Hawaii - The 413th Contracting Support Brigade at Fort Shafter become the first CSB to support a disaster scenario based on real-world events during a recent joint contracting field training exercise. The exercise, Pacific Contingency Contracting Disaster Training, was based on Operation Unified Assistance after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The exercise focused on providing emergency contracting to a joint task force supporting a foreign disaster relief effort.

The 916th, 682nd and the 713th are located at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, under the Expeditionary Contracting Command's 410th Contracting Support Brigade, also at Fort Sam Houston.

    A new contracting initiative by a command in southwest Afghanistan incorporating the use of larger companies mentoring to smaller companies to complete projects shows promise of serving as a model for the rest of Afghanistan. Mentoring to subcontractors is a relatively new way of doing business as it has been too risky and difficult for local, smaller companies to secure a contract with larger companies, said a coalition commander in Afghanistan. The use of local companies, however, helps an area's local economy where construction projects to the support Afghan National Security Forces are taking place.

The 12 Soldiers and civilians met in the Palo Alto area in support of a Habitat for Humanity project, lending a helping hand in constructing affordable housing for a deserving family. Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit housing organization working in partnership with volunteers to build simple, decent and affordable houses without interest or profit, for people in need. By the end of 2009, HFHSA built houses for 628 families in need.

    <b>What is it' </b> Warrior Care Month - initiated in 2008 - is a month long program to highlight the many ways the Army is and will continue to make available meaningful programs for the care and well-being of wounded, ill, and injured Soldiers and their families and caregivers. At installations throughout the Army, celebrations of families, information sharing about what the Army can do for these families, and what the Army has planned for the future will be told in a wide-variety of ways. Warrior Transition Unit leaders and Army Wounded Warrior Program advocates will be spreading across their installations, and to the communities within which Soldiers and their families live to let everyone know how committed the Army is to making life as comfortable as possible.

    Staff Sgt. (P) Marquiesha R. McKenzie, 629th Contingency Contracting Team, Republic of South Korea, is the noncommissioned officer in charge of a 15-person detachment that provides proactive cradle to grave contracting support for Osan Air Force Base. McKenzie is dedicated to supporting the most demanding customers in Korea, the 7th U.S. Air Force and its 51st Fighter Wing. McKenzie readily volunteers to ensure the mission is met on time to meet the critical needs of the Osan military and civilian community.
