CDC Malaria Map Application
About the Application
The CDC Malaria Map Application is an interactive map which provides information on malaria endemicity throughout the world. Users can search or browse countries, provinces, cities, and place names, get information about malaria in that particular location, and see recommended medications for malaria prevention for that area. Assessments of malaria endemicity are based largely on national surveillance reports which usually do not contain city-level information. Therefore, the map displays assessments of the presence of malaria in most countries at only the national and provincial level.
This tool is meant to complement resources currently available on the CDC Travelers' Health website.
If you find a problem or have a suggestion about the map, please contact us via email at mrmfeedback@cdc.gov.
About Malaria
Please note that the level of malaria within a location may differ according to altitude, population size, seasons, etc., so be sure to read all of the information for each location. Malaria endemicity also changes over time, for example, with changing rainfall patterns or successes in malaria control efforts. While updates are being made constantly, this map does not guarantee lack of malaria.

Searching the Map
The search box is located in the upper left-hand corner of the map. A search is initiated when the first letter is entered, and the search continues with each subsequent letter entered. As letters are entered the application provides a drop-down hint menu listing the possible options. The desired name can be picked from this drop-down menu. When a name is selected, a list of search results will be displayed below the search box. Alternately, typing in a name of a country, province, or city, partially or in its entirety, and hitting enter will also initiate the search and a list of search results will be displayed below the search box.
Clicking on the selected search result will cause the display to zoom in to the appropriate area of the map, flag the location on the map, and display location-specific malaria information.
Search results under Country, Province, and City are listed in alphabetical order. There are two search options available: (1) search a limited set of popular locations; and (2) search all known populated places in the world (>6 million places). To search the larger database, check the "Search all populated places" checkbox. Searching the smaller database will result in faster processing times and most locations can be found here. However, if a location is not found in the smaller database, the larger database can be used.

Use this menu to choose the color scheme displayed in the map: "Red, yellow, green" or "Black, grey, white."
Interpreting the Map
If the "Red, yellow, green" ("Black, gray, white") color scheme is chosen, red (black) represents areas where malaria is present everywhere. Areas colored yellow (grey) are regions in which malaria transmission only occurs in some parts. Green (white) represents areas where there is no known malaria.
Examples are given below:
- Area where malaria is present everywhere
- Area where presence of malaria varies
- Area with no known malaria
Retrieving Malaria Information
Malaria information may be retrieved using two different methods: (1) Clicking on a location from search results; and (2) Clicking directly on the map.
- Clicking on a location from search result
You can click on the location returned by the search and obtain malaria information for that location. Based on the type of the location you will see different categories of results.
-
Clicking on a country
When you click on a country, the malaria information for that country will be displayed in five columns. The first column on the left displays the name of the selected country. The second column displays where malaria is present (or not) in that country. The third column displays the drugs to which the malaria parasite is resistant to in that area. The fourth column lists the malaria type(s) existing in that country, and the last column lists the recommended prophylaxis to prevent contracting malaria in the country.
-
Clicking on a province
When malaria information is requested for a province, the information will be displayed in two tables. The first table providing malaria information in the province and has three columns: the first column displays the name of the selected province; the second column describes where malaria is present (or not) in that geographic area; the third column displays the recommended prophylaxis to prevent contracting malaria in that geographic area. The second table provides malaria information in the country where the province is located.
-
Clicking on a city
City-level information on malaria is not available for most cities. Therefore, the province-level assessments and recommendations will be displayed (i.e. malaria information about the province and country where the city is located is displayed). The information about the elevation of the selected city is displayed above the tables, so as to allow travelers to quickly obtain that information if the recommendations depend on altitude.
-
- Clicking directly on the map
Another way to get malaria information is to click directly on the map at the desired location. The malaria information for the desired province and country will be displayed.
