Roaring Run Wildflower Trail
Forest: George Washington & Jefferson National Forests
District: New Castle Ranger District
Description: This is an excellent hiking trail for members of the whole family, young and old alike. The easy, well marked trail begins at an historic iron furnace and winds back and forth along Roaring Run. You will pass rock walls and cascading water, ending at beautiful Roaring Run Falls. Five footbridges let you look down into the whirling waters. In the springtime a magnificent display of wildflowers lines the trail. You will see pink ladies-slippers, gaywings, devil’s bit, wild ginger, showy orchis, and a variety of violets, as well as many other plants.
Safety First: There are several bridges crossing Roaring Run, each has several steps at each end. At one point on the trail there is a steep set of stairs with handrails. Beware of slippery rocks and please stay on the trail. There is a safe viewing area at the falls. Do not attempt to climb the rocks around the falls as they wet, slippery, and very dangerous. Always carry a snack, water and a light raincoat, and wear (comfortable) hiking boots, when hiking.
