FORT DRUM, N.Y. - Fort Drum Soldiers, civilian employees and residents gathered April 13 on post to participate in the 2010 Earth Day Clean Up Your World event. The event was designed to clean up Fort Drum with volunteers tackling different sections on post. Groups went out and picked up as much litter as possible. At the end of the event, the groups weighed what they had collected, and they were awarded points based on the total weight of litter. Recyclables were worth double points. The group with the most points in each category received a trophy made of recycled materials and a tree will be planted in their honor.

FORT DRUM, N.Y. - The North Riva Ridge Dining Facility was officially opened during a ribbon-cutting ceremony April 15 on Fort Drum. Command Sgt. Maj. Delbert Byers, 3rd Brigade Combat Team command sergeant major, cut the ribbon and officially opened the $12 million, state-of-the-art dining facility.

FORT DRUM, N.Y. - Comics on Duty, an 18-year old program that brings stand-up comedians to service members around the world, presented an evening of entertainment April 13 at the Commons. Comedians Steve Bills, Tom Foss, Paul Ogata and John Bizarre performed amid boisterous laughter from the audience. All four are veterans of Comics on Duty and have traveled around the world - to include Iraq and Afghanistan - to perform for troops.

FORT DRUM, N.Y. - Warrior Transition Unit bus driver Fred Brooks likes to shoot the breeze with riding Soldiers, especially during cold North Country winters, when the shuttle's toasty interior invites passengers to hang back and chat. "On the bus we like to talk," said Brooks, an Army veteran of Operation Desert Storm. "But whatever's said on the bus stays on the bus." This past winter, a passenger said something that caught Brooks' attention. WTU Soldier Spc. Charles Wood, 33, said while staying at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., last year he connected with a woodcarver from Tennessee who honors wounded veterans by crafting them distinctive eagle-head canes, much like the one Wood himself uses for injuries sustained in Iraq.

Eighteen Soldiers in 2nd Battalion, 87nd Infantry Regiment received recognition April 12 at Magrath Gym for their efforts during the unit's most recent deployment to Afghanistan. Three Soldiers received the Purple Heart Medal for being injured in combat. Fifteen Soldiers received an Army Commendation Medal with Valor, for meritorious service while deployed.

FORT POLK, La. - Chefs from 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division and 1st Maneuver Enhancement Brigade combined to compete in a culinary-arts competition at Fort Lee, Va. in February and March. The Fort Polk Culinary Team participated in Fort Lee's U.S. Army Culinary Arts Competition, celebrating its 35th annual event this year. This year, the event featured 12 teams competing for the honor of Installation of the Year, which is open to all branches of the military that sent teams to Fort Lee for the competition.

The "Patriot Brigade" Soldiers were from Company B, 2nd Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment. Although they already volunteered to serve their country in time of war, they put military training aside for a day to help some of the citizens they serve.

The director of the American Red Cross on Fort Drum answered a unique call to duty in January after he was asked to help spearhead an emergency trip of 69 translator volunteers to the earthquake-ravaged nation of Haiti. "It's very few times in your career that you get the opportunity to actually go somewhere and realize that you were instrumental in saving people's lives," said Mark Hooper, Fort Drum's American Red Cross station manager, whose helicopter landed on the U.S.N.S. Comfort hospital ship off the coast of Haiti one week after the Jan. 12 quake.

When 10th Mountain Division (LI) Soldiers need support on the battlefield, the 10th Combat Aviation Brigade sends its newest heavy lifter to supply them. After returning from a yearlong deployment to Iraq in October, Soldiers of 3rd General Support Aviation Battalion recently received the Army's newest version of the CH-47 Chinook helicopter as they again prepare to deploy overseas at the end of the year. As they prepare to deploy, there will be an increase of training flights to familiarize Soldiers on their new aircraft.

The government of Puerto Rico established the Freedom Award in 2005 as a way to recognize National Guard and Reserve Soldiers of Puerto Rican descent who deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq.

FORT DRUM, N.Y. - Air traffic controllers of 3rd General Support Battalion, 10th Aviation Regiment, 10th Combat Aviation Brigade recently implemented their new Voice-Recognition Air Traffic Control Simulator, a training tool that is supposed to make Soldiers more proficient in handling incoming and outgoing aircraft on an airfield. The simulator was purchased last year and was installed only a few weeks ago, said Lt. Col. Dennis McKernan, battalion commander. The system cost roughly $272,000.

Turner in her ear, military policewoman Spc. Tara Shvetzov, a traffic accident investigator for U.S. Army Garrison, rushed down an icy Chapel Drive, climbed the stairs of a stranger's house and found a woman lying in a tub.

The post's Mass Notification System, also known as "Giant Voice," consists of a series of towers that have loud speakers mounted on top to notify the community of pending emergencies or natural disasters.

FORT DRUM, N.Y. - The U.S. Army Test, Measurement and Diagnostic Equipment Activity's newly renovated facility here opened its doors to units at Fort Drum after a ribbon-cutting ceremony Feb. 2. "The new facility has doubled the capacity for the storage of customers and equipment and will allow the customer to bring all the equipment to one building, making it simpler," said William P. CONTINGENCY OPERATING BASE ADDER, Iraq - United States Forces-Iraq Command Sgt. Maj. Lawrence Wilson and 7th Engineer Battalion Command Sgt. Maj. Federico Boyce inducted 20 new sergeants into the Noncommissioned Officer Corps during a ceremony Jan. 22 at Memorial Hall here. The ceremony began with a video to highlight the history of the Noncommissioned Officer. Wilson, the guest speaker, spoke to the new sergeants about what is expected of them and the new challenges they will face as NCOs.

FORT DRUM, N.Y. - The 1st Brigade Combat Team cased its colors Feb. 9 at Magrath Gym, officially making the final preparations for its upcoming deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. More than 3,000 Warrior Brigade Soldiers will deploy to Afghanistan within the coming months. Guest speaker at the ceremony was Maj. Gen. James L. Terry, 10th Mountain Division (LI) and Fort Drum commander. He told Soldiers and Families of the brigade how proud he is of them and how much faith he has in their abilities.

Blue Star Families was formed in December 2008 by military spouses in an effort to raise awareness of the challenges of military Family life among civilian communities and leaders. BSF includes Family Members of all branches of service, including National Guard and Reserve, as well as veterans and civilians.

Congratulating them on their retirement and thanking them for their years of service was Col. Bertram Providence, MEDDAC commander.

FORT POLK, La - If the U.S. Army does one thing better than anything else, it might be developing leaders. Leadership is easily noticeable wherever Soldiers don the Army's digital camouflage pattern; but even out of uniform, some Soldiers' leadership skills are unmistakably apparent. Spc. Chris Marshall, a petroleum supply specialist with Company B, 94th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (LI), takes the Army's lessons of leadership to heart, especially when mentoring children. He is a head coach of 13-to-14 year old basketball players on a team called the Spartans for Fort Polk's Child and Youth Services.
