University Radioactive Ion Beam Consortium

The University Radioactive Ion Beam (UNIRIB) consortium consists of eight member universities that partner to perform basic nuclear physics research using the fast-growing technique of radioactive ion beams.

Climate and Atmospheric Research

Through the Atmospheric Turbulence and Diffusion Division, ORISE works closely with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to perform research focused on air quality, contaminant dispersion and climate.

Environmental Assessments and Health Physics

ORISE instills confidence in environmental cleanup through survey assessments, health physics evaluations and hands-on, laboratory-based training in the radiation sciences.

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. ORISE takes responsibility for the content, quality, and scientific integrity of this CME activity.

Overview

This two-day, free CME course is designed to familiarize participants with emergency medical response to toxic exposures. Participants will receive an introduction to a variety of toxic syndromes understandable by anyone involved in planning and preparations for such incidents. The course will also review the medical and psychological consequences of exposures to a variety of materials. Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to:

Understand the concept of “agents of opportunity”
Identify chemical and radioactive agents of opportunity that could be used by terrorists
Discuss the history of these agents in individual and mass exposure situations
Describe the major health effects of TICs, TIMs and TRMs
Identify primary methods available to treat victims
Understand the psychological impact of mass exposures

This Agents of Opportunity for Terrorism course has been developed with support from the Office of the Director, Office of Terrorism Preparedness and Emergency Response (OTPER); National Center for Environmental Health/Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry (NCEH/ATSDR); Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The course is produced by the American College of Medical Toxicology (ACMT) and the Radiation Emergency Assistance Center/Training Site (REAC/TS).
