WASHINGTON, D.C. (Oct. 27, 2010) - U.S. Army Forces Command (FORSCOM) Family Readiness Group leaders attended the third and final Family Forum session Oct. 27 at the 2010 Association of the U.S. Army National Meeting and Exposition at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. Representing FORSCOM units nationwide, the 470 FRG leaders heard U.S. Army Chief of Chaplains Maj. Gen. Douglas L. Carver speak about spiritual resiliency and Strong Bonds. Resiliency was the topic Carver first brought to their attention, explaining that the outcomes of spiritual resilience could range from greater emotional health, happiness, martial stability, social support, less alcohol use and less delinquency.

Gen. James D. Thurman, commanding general of FORSCOM, delivered this welcome surprise to the assembled 470 FRG leaders Oct. 24 as he praised them for their service and dedication to helping Soldiers. FRG leaders from FORSCOM units all over the United States arrived in the national capital region Oct. 21 for the four-day symposium, and their training and networking will continue at the AUSA National Meeting Oct. 25-27. Following the FORSCOM FRG specific training, the volunteer leaders will attend the AUSA Family Forums to learn even more about the Army's support programs for Soldiers and Families.

Donna Engeman, Survivor Outreach Services survivor advocate and special projects coordinator for the U.S. Army Installation Management Command, was the primary SOS instructor at the training symposium. Jennifer Dempsey on the day she applied for the Interservice Physician Assistant Program. Dempsey joined a growing number of Soldiers who are committed to serving both their country and compatriots. On Fort Bragg, PAs provide primary health care for Soldiers and their Family members, often taking the place of licensed physicians in clinics and in the field. On a typical day, a PA can record medical histories, perform physical exams, treat patient illnesses, assist surgeons and promote the health of the installation.

In the era of after-school activities, dual working parents and other activities that leave our society with less time than they ever had before, no one is thinking about a disaster or emergency situation. Fort Bragg, in honor of the seventh annual National Preparedness Month in September, sponsored a "Get Ready Fort Bragg" essay and art contest last month for Fort Bragg elementary and junior high school students. "Get Ready Fort Bragg," is based off the "Ready Campaign," a program that encourages Americans to be prepared in the case of an emergency situation at home, work or within the community.

Jumpers from the 82nd Division Special Troops Battalion joined Chilean Army Col. Cristian Guedelhoefer, who was the primary jumpmaster, in dedicating the jump to honor of the rescued Chilean Miners.

On Saturday, two, 15-passenger vans will start a new tour every hour, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m, at the North Post PX. The event is open to the general public and is free of charge. "We probably have the majority of the LEED (leadership in energy and environmental design) projects in the region," said Melinda Harrington, sustainable materials planner for Fort Bragg's Environmental Division. "Most of our construction is also to showcase that green building is really just about 'smart building' with the systems in place," she added.

With more than 5,000 students enrolled in 10 Fort Bragg schools, including those at Linden Oaks and on Pope Air Force Base, the challenge to meet students' educational needs does not go unmet. Enrollment increased by about 300 to 400 students over last year's figures and will likely continue, said Michael Thornburg, education operations chief. "DoDEA (Department of Defense Education Activity) schools was able to supply us with all needed equipment and curriculum material to deal with this increased enrollment," Thornburg said.

The Directorate of Public Works and Fire and Emergency Services Division are preparing for an influx of more than 40,000 Soldiers, Families and civilians by 2011. This influx is due to the U.S. Army Forces Command and U.S. Army Reserve Command's transition from McPherson, Ga. to Fort Bragg due to the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission closing 20 military bases worldwide. The DPW is continually evaluating how much money is needed to meet Fort Bragg's needs, said Daryl Butler, a civil engineer with DPW.

The black diamond worn on the helmet of Task Force Destiny Soldiers is an iconic part of their uniform and history. The legend began in World War II, when the 101st Airborne Division created tactical helmet insignias to help reassemble the paratroopers on the ground. After jumping into Normandy on D-Day, the troops were divided over miles of terrain. If they were unable to recognize each other, it would be difficult to regroup. The four infantry regiment commanders pulled cards from a deck before D-Day, which is why they were labeled with card suites, said John O'Brien, Fort Campbell, Ky. installation historian at Don F. Pratt Museum. Some additional symbols were later added to designate other assets within the division.

FORT RILEY, Kan. - As Sgt. 1st Class Bill Flippo, his wife, Char, and the couple's three sons, Shawn, 8, Nathan, 7, and Hunter, 2, waited for Flippo's friend, Master Sgt. Kenneth Reynold's redeployment ceremony to start, Flippo reminisced about how he and Reynolds met. The two Soldiers met in 1999 when they were stationed with the 3rd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, out of Fort Bragg, N.C. They deployed together to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003.

Fort Bragg leadership is fully committed to support its Families and assist them in overcoming any negative forces that diminish their health and well being. Paul Driessen was a combat engineer. After a decorated military career, he moved from Germany to Fort Bragg in 2004, to run the School of Knowledge, Inspiration, Exploration and Skills Unlimited program as its instructional program specialist. Started by the Department of Army in 2004, SKIESUnlimited is an instructional program that enables children and youth to expand their knowledge, inspire, explore and acquire new "schools," based on a four-school system. The schools are the school of sports, arts, life skills and academic skills, Driessen said.

Did you know that the Month of October is Energy Awareness Month' Each year the Department Of Energy and Federal Energy Management Program encourage federal facilities to celebrate by hosting awareness campaigns for Energy Awareness Month and this year's theme is "Powering America We're on Target!" The theme depicts how federal agencies continue to zero in on energy targets to stimulate the economy, lower operating expenses, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve long-term energy and economic security. Fort Bragg will host events at Family housing and retail centers and contests in the schools and for any personnel working or living here.

The Army Community Service hosted a Fort Bragg community information fair, Sept. 28, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Fort Bragg Club. The fair included more than 70 organizations from the Fort Bragg and local community area. An organization that plays a big part in showing how much the community appreciates its military members at Fort Bragg is Fayetteville Cares, which, according to its mission statement, is a community based organization that provides support to our military personnel and their Families before, during and after deployments. To ensure that military members, including single Soldiers are not forgotten once they deploy and redeploy, Brenna Berger, a military spouse at Fort Bragg, drafted a grant request to the Armed Service Mutual Benefit Association that would eventually be awarded to Fayetteville Cares.

On the morning of Oct. 2, pet owners and their beloved animals gathered in front of the Main Post Chapel for the first Blessing of the Pets in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi. Led by Chaplain (Lt. Col.) James Brisson, Command Chaplain for the U.S. Army Special Forces Command, the service included Bible readings, prayers and blessings of each animal present. Pet owners were given a special medallion to be worn by each animal.

As the Army wrestles with the rise of suicides, there are several observations from the spiritual domain of resiliency that merit discussion. Itgoes without saying that no two suicides are identical. There are, however, common threads that link many acts of self-destruction such as the loss of significant relationships, drug and alcohol abuse, stress, financial and health problems. Soldiers (and spouses) need an honest-to-God, no-kidding battle buddy to help them through difficult times. That buddy or roommate sticks to them every day. This idea is on target because we are our brothers' keeper and when one suffers we all suffer.

Parents at Fort Bragg child care facilities may have noticed a slight increase in fees this week, as the Department of Defense-proposed new fee policy took effect Oct. 1 throughout the services. The new fee policy, which is the result of a 2008 study conducted by DoD, may cause Fort Bragg Families to see an increase of between $14 and $32 for residents who use full-day child care. Patrons of the post's School Age Program may see an increase between $8 and $46 per month, according to officials at Fort Bragg's Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation directorate.

Fort Bragg chefs are set to defend the installation's title during the Army's most prestigious culinary competition - the Phillip A. Connelly awards. Separate teams will evaluate Fort Bragg at the small DFAC level (the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade dining facility) and in the active Army field competition (126th Transportation Company, 82nd Sustainment Bde., ) during October and November. Fort Bragg is at a historical level because the installation has made it to the DA level with all three events. This has never been accomplished by any other installation.

Retired Sgt. 1st Class Dana Bowman, enlisted as an engineer in the Army before heeding the call to Special Forces service. That battle cry took him to the violence-torn country of Panama to engage Manuel Noriega's troops and eventually persuaded him to join the most advanced parachute team in the world - the Golden Knights. On Feb. 6, 1994, while practicing the elite diamond track maneuver with his jump partner, Sgt. Jose Aguillon, the unthinkable occurred. In the skies over Yuma, Ariz., the two Golden Knights had collided at a combined speed of 300 miles per hour, instantly killing Aguillon. Many Soldiers are unaware that AR 600-20, Chapter 5-5 Family Care Plans was updated almost a year ago (as of November 2009) requiring an additional document (DA Form 7666) in certain cases in order for the plan to be complete. Chapter 5-5 a(3)(f) now requires that DA Form 7666 (Parental Consent) be completed by all parties with a legal interest in the custody of the minor child whenever the child is not left in the care of the other biological parent or another person with a legal interest in the custody of the child.

Soldiers of the 988th Military Police Company, Fort Leonard Wood, took the first step towards a green beret at Gerlach Field, Sept. 23, with the Special Forces Army Physical Fitness Test. The test is your standard physical fitness test; two-minute push ups and sit ups, followed by a two mile run, however it is conducted in the Army Combat Uniform.

Fort Leonard Wood will bid farewell to the petroleum vehicle operator's course for Soldiers of the 92F military occupational specialty, otherwise known as petroleum supply specialists. The course, which spans across several training areas on the installation, has been in operation since 1982 and will permanently shut down Friday as the final class graduates from the five-week course.

Less than a dozen veterans of the former 325th Glider Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division reunited for the last time in Charlotte Sep. 25. The remaining Glidermen have held annual reunions all over the country for 30 years. As the final meeting, Paratroopers with 1st Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team attended to pay their respect to the men who paved the way for the 2BCT.

Each year, Airborne Engineers from the 82nd Airborne Division, commemorate this historic event by holding their own "Crossing the Waal" at McKeller's Lake. But, this year was special because it was the first in nearly three years that all the engineer companies from the four Brigade Combat Teams of the 82nd Airborne Division were able to attend, due to deployment in support of the Global War on Terror.

Country music star, Craig Morgan performed a free concert on Pope Air Force Base, Sept. 17. The former 82nd Airborne Division Soldier, said he related to the crowd and the long waits on the flight lines of Pope. Morgan, originally from Nashville, Tenn., is no stranger to Fort Bragg. He was stationed at Fort Bragg from 1990 to 1992 in the 82nd Abn. Div. "It feels good to be back here, feels like home every time we're here," Morgan said. "I've spent a lot of time on this tarmac - the only reason I became a jumpmaster was that they were the last ones to put the parachutes on."

Fort Bragg Garrison command, agencies and customers exchanged ideas at the town hall meeting held Sept. 14 at the Yntema Club on Gruber Road. The meetings are held quarterly and are open to the military community. Colonel Stephen Sicinski, Fort Bragg Garrison commander, said the meetings provide an opportunity for units and individuals to get feedback. "This is your ability to have a person-to-person interface with those individuals who impact your quality of life on Fort Bragg," said Sicinski.

The Combined Federal Campaign of Southeastern North Carolina launched this year's campaign at the Fort Bragg Club Sept. 15. Chaplain (Col.) David P. Hillis, Fort Bragg garrison chaplain, opened the event praising the giving nature of our "generous nation that gives around the world." Dan Russell, CFC director, said, "We've opened a new website this year that gives you the ability to do online pledging and search for the charities you're interested in. This makes it easier not only for those of us stateside, but for the Soldiers who are deployed and serving downrange. This year's regional CFC goal is $2.5 million.
