Implementing NextGen initiatives involves complex activities ranging from concept development to deployments of capabilities in the National Airspace System.
Controllers at Minneapolis and St. Louis TRACONs are using a new NextGen tool that helps them maintain safe separation between aircraft on final approach. The tool, called Automated Terminal Proximity Alert (ATPA), features several options to keep controllers aware of how much space exists between IFR aircraft flying an in-line approach into an airport.
ATPA will be operational at other Common ARTS facilities that have color displays by the end of the year. Additionally, plans are in place to implement ATPA in all terminal system programs including the Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System, or STARS.
In August, we published new satellite-based navigation procedures.
Satellite-based procedures are updated every eight weeks and are real implementations that currently provide benefits. These implemented procedures and identification of other implementations can be seen on our interactive maps at www.faa.gov/nextgen/flashmap/.
*This month’s two new RNAV routes are for helicopters. These helicopter routes will be included in the totals going forward.
