How can I obtain copies of military records?
The Field Personnel File containing all military and health records for all Air Force members who retired or separated before Oct. 1, 2004 have been forwarded for storage to the National Personnel Records Center - Military. An individual's complete service record is available to the former service member or, if deceased, to his or her next of kin (parents, spouse, or children).
Limited information such as dates of service, awards, and training is available to anyone. Not available to the general public is information which would invade an individual's privacy; for example, medical records, Social Security number, or present address. If requesting the records of a relative, a requester should mention the relationship to the former member (brother, uncle, or other). There is no charge for this service to former service members or their next of kin. For others, a nominal fee is charged for research and reproduction costs.
Files at the Records Center are maintained as historical records only and are not updated to reflect current data on the former service member. The address for the National Personnel Records Center is:

Requests for military personnel records or information from them cannot be accepted by e-mail at this time. The Privacy Act of 1974 (5 U.S.C. 552a) and Department of Defense directives require a written request, signed and dated, to access information from military personnel records. Our e-mail address should only be used only to request general information (hours of operations, procedures, and forms) or to submit compliments, complaints or concerns.

Retired Air Force Military Records
Retired Or Separated On Or After 1 October 2004
Former active-duty Airmen who retired or separated on or after Oct. 1, 2004 can request copies of records such as DD Form 214's, performance reports and other information by writing, faxing or emailing:

People requesting their own records need to send a letter that includes: name, social security number, contact information, specific record requested and the requestor's signature. Those requesting a deceased relative's record also need to provide their relationship to the former Airman so next of kin relationship can be verified. If the relative was deceased after their separation or retirement, proof of death must also be furnished.
Veterans may also access their record on line by registering for a Premium account on www.eBenefits.va.gov. Click the register button at the top of the home page and follow the instructions provided to obtain a Premium account. If you have questions or problems with eBenefits, mouse over the HELP button on the top of the home page and then select CUSTOMER SUPPORT and follow the instruction provided.
Retired Or Separated Before 1 October 2004
Those who retired or separated before Oct. 1, 2004 can visit the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) web site (http://www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/)for record request instructions.
If you are a veteran or next-of-kin of a deceased veteran, you may now use vetrecs.archives.gov to order a copy of the military records.
All medical and dental records for all Air Force personnel (retired or separated prior to May 1994) are stored permanently at the NPRC (see link above). All medical and dental records for all Air Force personnel (retired or separated after May 1994 are maintained by the Veterans Administration Service Medical Records Center (314-538-4500).
Active Duty members who were released and are serving an inactive Reserve obligation should request copies of their records from Air Reserve Personnel Center, ARPC/DPSC, 18420 E. Silver Creek Bldg #390 MS 68, Buckley AFB CO 80011, call 1-800-525-0102, option 3 or fax 1-478-327-2215.
Those who served or are serving in the Air National Guard or Reserve can call the Air Reserve Personnel Center at 1-800-525-0102.
