Re: Air Force leaders name next top enlisted leader
I retired from the Air Force in 1996. During my 26 years there was only one black CMSAF and no females. There have been neither since the one and only black CMSAF. If this is a multicultural Air Force, I think the enlisted leadership should reflect that fact.

Re: New uniforms: Comfortable, functional are goals
I think the Heritage uniform is a classy evolution of the "Hap Arnold look" and is certainly more "military-looking" than the current three-button service coat. I understand CSAF concerns with regard to current uniforms, but would love to see the Heritage Coat pursued in the near-future.

Comment: New uniforms: Comfortable, functional are goals
Uniforms have always provided a lot to talk around the base. It is funny now to walk onto a base and see the variety of camouflage patterns worn by various people. It is not too unusual to see a person wearing one camouflage uniform and a mismatching coat. It reminds me of the introduction of the aircrew-style name badges on the BDU, where you couldn't tell the rank of a person until you were close enough to touch them. Hopefully the Air Force has learned its lesson and will have flightline personnel and maintenance people wear-test uniforms, not students in a classroom environment. View story

Comment: B-1B makes impact throughout Southwest Asia
As a retired Air Force member who helped bring the B-1 on line at Dyess, it is really interesting how the aircraft has grown from its inception to where it is today. The weapon system first received much negative reports in what I would consider its infancy. But as this story tells, it is becoming quite the versatile platform as it and technology matures. Any time I see a B1-B, I always look for the tail flash to see if it's a 'Bat,' as the 9th was know when I was assigned as a crew chief. All I can say to all the current active-duty military is thank you. View story

Re: Air Force continues partnership with Professional Bull Riders
I think that it's about time that the Air Force partners up with the PBR. As an avid fan of bull riding and rodeo, I've been to many events where the Army was sponsoring it. Great to see the Air Force being represented. Cowboy up!

Re: Heritage Coat
Okay, I might just be an airman, but before I came into the Air Force, I was a CAP cadet who wore the old style jacket that look just fine. Why can't the Uniform Board just go with that instead of coming up with a new jacket. As for the belt, lose it. Some Air Force personnel have a little extra around the waist and the belt will make it more noticeable. For me, I love the old look, but changing an old look is just wrong.  Why change something that works?

Re: Post 9/11 GI Bill transferability
I understand Chief McCune's sentiments, although I disagree. The guidance about whether the new GI Bill would be transferable was confusing, which led me to believe I would be able to transfer it to my son or my wife, who followed me around, never missed a chance to support our units events, left many good paying jobs that would have had a pension, etc. I've found after retirement that some of the sacrifices I took for granted were very unique.. My opinion is that people that meet the retirement eligibility have met the threshold for deserving to transfer their benefits to immediate family. I understand the retention aspect...but if you can pay $40,000 to someone who enlists for three years, why can't you help someone and their family who gave 20 years?  By the way, my veteran plate reads AIRPWR. Still Air Force blue.

Comment: Wounded warrior receives surprise promotion
Dan was our family liaison officer when I was injured in Iraq in October of 2007. He is much deserving of this promotion, and we are overjoyed that he received it. Congratulations, Dan. View story

Re: Post 9/11 GI Bill transferability
Anyone who signed up for the MGIB many years ago, when there was no provision to transfer benefits to anyone, have no business complaining about the service requirement if you CHOOSE to transfer the benefit. What was your plan to educate your kids before this came up?
