A Bed's Healing Power

On average, we spend 33 percent of our day in bed. Now imagine if you are suffering from 2nd and 3rd degree burns and those eight hours in bed are no longer restful, but excruciating.

Gravity is your worst enemy—fighting you every ounce, rubbing your wounds with every twitch and movement.

The U.S. Department of Defense and Department of State worked diligently with the Moldovan Minister of Health to help lighten that painful load for the burn victims of Moldova, literally.

Here we are with the specialized burn bed.

Last month, the United States donated a $59,603 specialized burn recovery bed to the National Burn Center in Chisinau, Moldova. A dedication ceremony was held at the Burn Center where Ambassador Asif J. Chaudhry, U.S. Ambassador to Moldova, dedicated the bed to Mr. Andrei Usatii, Moldova Minister of Health, and Dr. Taran, Director of the National Burn Center. This state of the art burn recovery bed has the air flow capability to lighten a 100 kg person to a gravity weight of 30 kg, greatly improving burn patients’ comfort and recovery time.

In a past blog covering the Burn Center, Lt Col Mark Hubner, a medical doctor on our US European Command J4 Medical Readiness staff, stated the importance of “teaching a person how to fish”. EUCOM’s Office of Defense Cooperation’s Humanitarian Assistance branch in Moldova took this statement to heart, diligently researching and implementing new ‘fishing’ techniques for Moldova’s disaster preparedness capability in the field of Health Services.

The most recent event involved a Burn Management Seminar information exchange between the Moldovan doctors and three specialists from the Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas.

This burn recovery bed is yet another tool in Moldova’s “fishing tackle box”.

Building partner capacity through medical engagement

In response to changes in the 2006 Quadrenial Defense Review and the U.S. European Command’s new Strategy for Active Security, engagement has moved to Building Partner Capacity. Medical engagement is an excellent venue to execute this mandate.
