Effective with the March 13, 2012 release, revisions incorporating improvements to the JOLTS birth-death model have been made to the full data series for job openings, hires, and separations. In addition, data from January 2007 forward incorporate annual updates to the Current Employment Statistics employment estimates and the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey seasonal adjustment factors. See page 5 of the news release for more information on all the revisions. Tables showing the revisions from 2000 through 2011 can be found using this link: http://www.bls.gov/jlt/revisiontables.htm. Also effective with this release, JOLTS is adopting the 2012 version of the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). Changes in the 2012 NAICS structure are minor and do not impact the published JOLTS data series.
August 2011 estimates of hires, separations, and job openings originally published on October 12, 2011, had not been adjusted to account for a strike in the information industry. With the September release, August estimates reflect both regular revisions and corrections. For further assistance, see www.bls.gov/bls/errata/jolts_corrections_11082011.htm.
With the release of January 2009 data on March 10, 2009, BLS implemented improvements to the methodology used to generate estimates of hires, separations, and job openings from the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) program. These changes were designed to improve the measurement of hires, separations, and openings and to more closely align the hires and separations estimates with monthly employment change as measured by the BLS Current Employment Statistics (establishment) survey. All JOLTS historical series were revised to incorporate the new methods. For general information about the improvements in our methodology, please see (www.bls.gov/jlt/methodologyimprovement.htm).
