State Agencies Montana
The
Montana Department of Education receives funding from CDC’s Division of
Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention education and conduct
the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The goals of the Montana HIV/AIDS
Prevention Education Program are to strengthen the capacity of local
education agencies to implement effective HIV prevention education programs
and policies, and to collaborate to address the needs of at-risk youth,
particularly Native American youth.
Montana's Program In Action
Providing HIV
Prevention Education
- Providing training and technical assistance on HIV prevention
education and HIV-related policies to teachers and school support staff
through a cadre of trainers.
- Collaborating with the juvenile justice system, the Indian Health
Service, and agencies serving out-of school youth to support the
delivery of HIV prevention education to youth at disproportionate risk.
- Providing mini-grants to teams of high school students to develop
their leadership and data-interpretation skills and prepare them to
educate local decision-makers regarding the need for effective HIV
prevention education.
Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- Administering the YRBS to collect data on youth risk behaviors that
are representative of middle and high school students in Montana.
- Providing technical assistance to support local YRBS coordinators in
reporting data in their respective communities.
- Disseminating YRBS results through brochures, fact sheets, oral
presentations and the Web site.
