FSIS will pay travel and transportation expenses to the first post of duty for our newly hired veterinarians.  This incentive is available to new Federal appointees and only includes the actual costs incurred as a result of the employee's travel and transportation of household goods to the first post of duty. 

Our Public Health Veterinarian's are valued members of a dynamic team.  Most importantly, you are in a pivotal role from day one and your work has visible impact.  You will be:

• planning, organizing, coordinating and adapting the full range of meat and poultry inspection operations in slaughter and/or processing establishments;
• ensuring establishments meet requirements of the Pathogen Reduction and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulations;
• overseeing other consumer protection, non-food safety concerns such as proper labeling and packaging;
• serving as team leader who works with and supervises other public health professionals to ensure establishments under our jurisdiction comply with sanitation standards and properly implement systems that control hazards from entering the food supply;
• enforcing Federal meat and poultry inspection procedures prior to slaughter and throughout the entire establishment, including humane handling, ante-mortem inspection, post-mortem inspection, processing operations, veterinary dispositions, and transportation and distribution of meat, poultry, and egg products to markets and retail stores.

The requirement for Training as a Condition of Employment (TCOE) is temporarily suspended.  However, this position does have a training program requirement. If selected, you will be required to complete a 9-week training program at a designated location which may require travel outside the duty location for an extended period. In addition, you will attend 2 weeks of Public Health Information System (PHIS) training. You will not be placed back under Training as a Condition of Employment (TCOE) when that requirement is reinstated.  The Public Health Veterinarian (PHV) methods’ training is necessary to perform the duties and responsibilities of a PHV to further the mission of the Office of Field Operations and FSIS

This position has a specialized education requirement.

You must have a DVM degree (or will receive your DVM degree within the next nine months) from an AVMA accredited veterinary medical school. If you have a degree from a foreign veterinary medical school, that is not accredited by the AVMA, click on this REQUIREMENTS link.

Travel:   Some positions will require travel from establishment to establishment

Promotion Opportunity:  If selected at the AP-3 level and the position has promotion potential to the AP-4, you may be promoted to the AP-4, upon completion of 12 months of satisfactory performance.   The majority of our
positions are full performance level AP-4 (GS-12/13); however we do employ some
full performance AP-3 (GS-9/11) veterinarians.
